Shannon MacWilliams Element: Yttrium
Yttrium • Element Name: Yttrium • Chemical Symbol: Y • Atomic Number: 39 • Atomic Mass: 88.9
Info and Physical Description • Family Number: 16 • Valence Number: 3 • State of Matter: Solid • Metal, Non-Metal or Metalloid: (Transition) Metal • Color: Silvery-white
History of the Element • Yttria (yttrium oxide) was discovered by Johann Gadolin in 1794, in a mineral called gladolinite. Yttrium is a rare earth metal • It was found in a quarry called Ytterby. Yttrium can be found in nearly all earth minerals. • It was also identified in lunar rocks, brought back by Apollo missions, which found to have a high yttrium content.
Uses and Impact on Human Life • Yttrium is used as a “phosphor” to produce the red color in television screens. • It is a catalyst for ethylene polymerisation • It is used to produce yttrium iron gamets which are useful microwave filters • It is used in ceramic and glass formations • Yttrium aluminum gamets are extremely efficient transmitters and transducers of acoustic energy helping with major advances in technology like headphones etc. and can increase efficiency of electricity • An isotope of yttrium is being used in the medical field because radiation given off from the isotope kills cancer cells
