  1. Causes OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR U.S. History

  2. A brief History The American civil war was the largest war fought on American soil. It claimed lives of Union and Confederate Soldiers by the thousands. Although the war had many reasons for being fought, the main issue was slavery. The issue however, was not slavery itself. The issue was the expansion of slavery into the newly acquired western states such as Kansas, Nebraska, and Texas.

  3. Why Slavery? Northern Views Southern Views • The North viewed the South as an evil power and fought by the formation of the Republican political party, not the party of today, but modeled it closely. Questioned the Morality of Slavery and fought the expansion. • The South saw it as the North was giving them no political recognition and thought the North was out to abolish slavery as a whole. Slavery was a “business” in the south and was important to their way of life.

  4. Knocking On The Door of War The Start of Secession • From 1840-1860 little fragments had stirred up tempers and set a mindset for civil war and up rise. • But the last straw was in 1860 with the election of Abraham Lincoln. This followed a raid in the south by John Brown. • John Brown was a southerner with Republican views. In one night he freed over five hundred African Slaves and murdered their white slave owners. He was caught and hung. But his actions, set a stage for lack of trust and rebellion in the South.

  5. Secession • In December of 1860 it happened. The South had endured all it could. South Carolina began the Secession followed by Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and finished with Texas. • Within weeks of the start of the war, these states were joined by Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia. • The middle states saw most of the fighting and provided most of the soldiers for the effort. 40% of Confederate soldiers were from Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia.

  6. Overview • As you all know, the outcome of the war resulted in a Northern victory. But what most assume is that all was set right after. This is where the misunderstanding takes place. • The Civil War did not fix the problem of slavery in the United States. It went on for almost another century until something was done about it. Blacks were still discriminated against in the U.S. Especially in the South. • However the start of the war set up our nations political parties of the Republicans and Democrats and made them what they are today. The U.S. Civil War ended in 1865. The south was brought back into account as a whole part of the U.S. After a swing of events such as Jim Crow laws, Civil Rights, and other fights America finally abolished slavery.
