  2. Bible The Puritans believed that the Bible was God’s true law, and it provided a plan for living. The basis for the Puritan’s beliefs was an emphasis on the righteousness and sovereignty of God.

  3. TULIP Total Depravity – every person is born sinful Unconditional Election – only a few are selected for salvation Limited Atonement – Jesus died for the chosen only, not for everyone Irresistible Grace – God’s grace is freely given, it cannot be earned or denied Perseverance – those elected by God have full power to interpret the will of God, and to live uprightly

  4. Hanging When you are hung, you will stand on a platform, a rope will be around your neck and a towel or something similar will be in your mouth (to keep the subject from choking on their tongue). Then you will be raised, and dropped, until you die.

  5. Stoning A form of punishment where a group throws stones at a person until death ensues.

  6. Branding This punishment required stoves to heat the irons. A brand could be applied to hands, cheeks, shoulders, or foreheads. The 2 most common letters are “T” for thief, and “M” for manslaughter.

  7. Pillory This is commonly known as the “stretch-neck”. In the pillory, you cannot hide your face from the townspeople. They also free range to throw food or other objects at the subject.

  8. Bilboes Bilboes were iron restraints placed on a person’s ankles or wrists.

  9. Brank Commonly known as the “gossip’s bridle”. It effectively silenced the offender.

  10. Dismemberment Dismemberment is the act of cutting, tearing, or pulling the limbs of a living thing.

  11. Boiling to Death Death by boiling is a method of execution in which a person is killed by being immersed in a boiling liquid such as water or oil.
