Microsoft Desktop Operating Systems Recovery Calvin Chen
Agenda • Why is Microsoft Doing This? • Four OEM Options Available • Option One – Do Nothing • Option Two – HDD Recovery • Option Three – BIOS Locked CD Recovery • Option Four – DSP CD • Premio’s Schedule • JDE Part Numbers
Why is Microsoft Doing This? • To prevent “casual” piracy of their desktop operating systems (OS) - 98SE, NT 4.0 Workstation, and W2K Pro, and their upcoming Windows Me (Millennium Edition) • Currently, all desktop OS CDs are “open” or “unlocked” • This means the end user can simply take the 98SE CD that ships with a Premio system, and install it onto a Dell, Compaq, or any other PC • Obviously, Microsoft wants to prevent this from happening
Why is Microsoft Doing This? (continued) • Microsoft Applications or Server OS CDs are NOT affected • For Office 2000, Works 2000, NT 4.0/W2K Server, etc., we will continue to ship open CD(s) with each system • Beginning on April 1, 2000, Microsoft will stop manufacturing open desktop OS CDs (THIS APPLIES TO ALL MICROSOFT OEMs, NOT JUST PREMIO) • Purchasing Dept. has stocked extra open CDs ahead of time to get us pass the April 1, 2000 deadline • But once our supply of open desktop OS CDs are depleted, we have the following options…
Four OEM Options Available • Microsoft is giving OEMs four options: • 1 – Do nothing; load the operating system onto the HDD and ship the system without any CD or recovery solution • 2 – Use a HDD based recovery solution • 3 – Ship the system with a BIOS locked CD • 4 – Ship the system with an open DSP CD
Option One (Pros and Cons) • 1 – Do nothing; load the operating system onto the HDD and ship the system out without any CD or recovery solution • For the end users, there is NO PRO for this option! • Premio will not use this option
Option Two (Pros and Cons) • 2 – Use a HDD based recovery solution • Premio will make this option available for 98SE, NT 4.0 Workstation, and W2K Pro • PRO – fast recovery time as compared to a CD based recovery (4 min 14 sec for a HDD recovery as compared to 15 min 15 sec for a CD recovery BASE OS load!) • PRO – allows Premio to custom build the HDD recovery for each sales order; it will take up approximately 450-550MB of HDD space • CON – If the HDD goes bad, the end user must replace the HDD with one that’s preloaded with the OS and HDD recovery
Option Three (Pros and Cons) • 3 – Ship the system with a BIOS locked CD • PRO – If end user HDD crashes, he can simply replace it with a new HDD and reload the OS • CON – CD recovery will only load the BASE OS; any specials drivers that are needed, the end user will have to manually reload • CON – Recovery time is MUCH slower compared to HDD Recovery and requires loading of any special drivers • Remember, THE BIOS LOCKED CD WILL ONLY WORK WITH PREMIO SYSTEMS SOLD AFTER 06/26/2000!
Option Four (Pros and Cons) • 4 – Ship the system with a DSP (open) CD • PRO – This is an open CD, which you can install in any system • CON – The cost of a DSP CD is more expensive
Our Schedule • Our target date for receiving the 98SE BIOS locked CDs is 07/01/2000 • Beginning on Mon 06/26/2000, we will move to the HDD recovery solution for both 98SE and NT 4.0 Workstation • For W2K Pro, we will continue using our HDD recovery solution, which we already have in place • We will develop BIOS locked CD solutions for NT 4.0 and W2K Pro; target launch is middle of July 2000
JDE Part Numbers • For reference, here are the JDE part numbers for each OS recovery solution: • 98SE BIOS Locked CD – 689701 • 98SE HDD Recovery – 688701 • 98SE BIOS Locked CD AND HDD Recovery – 687701 • 98SE DSP CD – 680834 • NT 4.0 WS BIOS Locked CD – 689702 (in development) • NT 4.0 WS HDD Recovery – 688702 • NT 4.0 WS BIOS Locked CD AND HDD Recovery – 687702 • NT 4.0 WS DSP CD – 680862 • W2K Pro BIOS Locked CD – In development • W2K Pro HDD Recovery – 689853 • W2K Pro DSP CD – 680855
