  1. Writing an academic Reflection essay Balance between academic essay and first-person reflective essay.

  2. Structure • Critically reflective – First person (Keep it first person throughout, don’t shift into second or third person) • Analyze/evaluate how you did? Use past tense (can you present in intermediate, but change to past in final, be consistent). • How did the different pieces: message, audience, and medium contribute to the effectiveness of the project. • Do not give me a play-by-play (a summary)

  3. Remediation: Analysis • Was your message effective? • What visual devices did you use to highlight: ethos, pathos, logos. Explain, relay specifically ie.: this statistic appealed to ethos, this image appealed to pathos, this color appealed to pathos etc. • Did you choose the right medium? • Did you choose the right information to support? Statistics? Raise awareness effectively? • Design elements: Font, colors, images, graphics….How did these help relay your message? Where they effective? Could they have been more effective? How? Why?

  4. Essay Thesis statement • Evaluative claim about your experience. • Build up to your thesis: place toward the end of the essay. (Suggested) • Be critical: (This will have no impact on your grade) • 1. Do not state the obvious: you think you did well, or poorly…you liked or did not like the project. • Instead: Engage in how the project was effective/ineffective. Did it meet the purpose? What did you learn during the process (early, intermediate, phases, while designing). • Did it provoke new questions, new ways to look at your message?

  5. Organization of essay- two choices • Main Idea/Theme • Focus on main ideas or themes. • Paragraph 1: Intro, discuss process • Paragraph 2: Message being relayed • Paragraph 3: Change of medium • Paragraph 4: Change of audience • Paragraph 5: Change effective, explain • Last paragraph: Conclusions, thesis. • Chronological • Reflect the order of events/insights as they occurred. • Paragraph 1: beginning of project • Paragraphs 2…Progression to finished project • Paragraph 3,4: remediation process • Last paragraph: thesis statement. How and why effective? How did the process end?

  6. Remediation – • Should be third person • Logical Progression of supporting points • Clear and concise: Purpose, and Audience

  7. Project: what is your message/purpose • Examples: Legalize Marijuana: It’s time to turn the White House green • Space Exploration: A Look into Unmanned Robots (message to promote) • Why is Gun Control important? • What is Immigration reform? (Support change, appealing to change)
