Our English Language Learners • 55 English Language Learners (ELL) students • 17 Home Languages • More “newcomers” have arrived than in the past These students need: • A caring environment in which teachers and other students are interested in them • Direct instruction in English by a certified ESL teacher • “Sheltered instruction” in their classrooms

The RETELL Initiative • The state designed a multifaceted approach to addressing both the achievement gap and inadequate access to education. • The components of RETELL include: • Sheltered English Instruction Endorsement (SEI) • Ongoing Professional Development and Growth • More Robust ELL Standards and Assessments [WIDA and ACCESS] Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education

SEI Regulations: Major Provisions • As of July 1, 2016, all core academic teachers of ELLs (SEI teachers) and their supervisors must hold an SEI endorsement. • This endorsement may be earned by completing the SEI endorsement course, certain more rigorous graduate-level training, or passing an SEI MTEL test available in Spring 2014 • As of July 1, 2016, all applicants for license renewal must have at least 15 PDPs related to SEI or ESL and 15 PDPs related to the teaching of students with disabilities Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education

  6. SEI Endorsement Options • Full 45 Hour SEI Course (3 grad. Credits) • Bridge Course A (Completed Category Trainings 1, 2, and 4) • Bridge Course B • (Completed 2 Category trainings : 1, 2, and/or4) • Hold an ESL License (or meet criteria in 603 CMR 7.14(1)(a)) • Passed SEI MTEL Test (available spring 2014)

  7. The SEI Endorsement Course The course focuses on approaches to teaching and assessing vocabulary, reading, and writing for ELLs in the content area. It also covers second language acquisition, cultural and social factors impacting ELLs. Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education

  8. The SEI Endorsement Course The course is 3 graduate credits: 45 hours in 11 3-hour face-to-face sessions and 5 online sessions. It is free of charge. Graduate credit is available for as little as $50/credit.

  9. SEI course for Lincoln • Our second cohort of teachers in the SEI course will be 16 gr. K-8 grade teachers who will participate with teachers from Sudbury • The course will be located in Lincoln and in Sudbury, alternating sessions. • The course will start next fall, 2014. • Interested?
