  1. PRESENTATION presentation Name: Natanael Peguero Teacher: German, Lorena Date: 10-30-10 Class: English Project: Children of the Sea

  2. Author, Publication Date Localization The First published of the Children of the Sea was in the October of 1993, this was a short fiction story by women under the title from the ocean floor , the children of the sea. This story also included in edwidge danticat’s 1995 short story collection of krik? Krak! This story of young couple separated by political conflict in Haiti, it received the positive attention from critics as did the book, and the author quickly gained a reputation as one of the most promising writers in the United States. The tragic story, which concerns a doomed fate of a young couple, concerns many of the issues Danticat addresses in her other stories and in her novel, Breath, Eyes, Memory, which was published in 1994.

  3. Setting Analysis Where did this story take place? This story take place in Haiti, when two partner were passing for a hard situation that made them be separated to each other, the young revolutionary boy decided to leave his country because he was wanted by the authorities in Haiti, as well as from poverty and violence, he had to leave Haiti and his girl in search of a better life, he traveled in a boat to Miami.

  4. Why do you think that the author choose this setting? Well from what I could understand about this story. I think the author feels consented about what happened to these people and I think that she passed through the same situation then she decided to write about what happened during that time.

  5. Summary • This story is about a boy and a girl that they were in love. Also the boy had to leave his country because he’s against the government and he had a radio show that influenced the people against the government. The boy and girl tell their stories through a series of letters. Though they cannot mail these letters, they are writing to appease their loneliness while they are away from one another. • Copied by carlos ditren.

  6. How does this setting relate to the work as whole? this is related to the work as a whole, as we saw in class and I could read it all together we saw a young Haitian revolutionary boy, thinking of his girlfriend and he's on a small boat that has set sail to Miami, Florida. He is going into exile because he is wanted by the Haitian government.

  7. Character Analysis part I • Who are the primary characters? • The boy and the girl. • Who are the secondary characters? • Celianne, father, mother and madam Roger.

  8. Character Analysis part II Chose 1 character and explain how they changed/ grew throughout the story. In my case I have chose one person of the secondary character that is a young woman of fifteen years old called who is on the boat. She was pregnant. Celianne has been raped and impregnated by the soldiers who had come to her house to arrest her brother. During the voyage she gives birth to a girl who is stillborn. The child's silence underscores the symbolism of her mother's silence, which indicates that spiritually, Celianne is already dead. When she throws the baby's body into the sea, she jumps in after it and drowns.

  9. THEME What was the theme of the story? The theme of children of the Sea, It refers to concepts from life, society causes by the regiments , for speaking publicly, and for trying to protect their families. The message of story is telling the people how was Haiti at this time and also telling us if the Haitian people disagree about the government, It is the fundamental thought around which the entire work of literature is based on a young boy and a young girl that they passed for a difficult time that they cant see each others. I think this message was wrote to those people who today day are trying to leave theirs country causes of that slave and the economy situation in theirs country.

  10. My opinion about this story . Well after all I can say, when I was reading this story the Children of the sea I asked to myself how these people survived during the time that they were sailing, I understand the causes of why they had to leave their country. the primaries characters, for example they been in love and they had to separated because the boy were wanted by the police and he had to leave in a boat to Miami. And at the end the story do not tell us what happened with them.
