  2. Quality of Information Contents • Context • Needs • SAPN Objectives • SAPN Implementations • Conclusion Jérôme FERRE –- p. 2

  3. Context SAPN : Paris-Normandy Motorway Company • 367 km motorway network • high traffic volume • access to several urban areas and ports • weekend destinations: Deauville, Honfleur, …, from April to November • regular traffic jams on Sunday evenings Jérôme FERRE –- p. 3

  4. Quality for Road Network operators (for everyday tasks) Quality for end users (clients) End user traffic information services are more and more effective End users are beginning to pay for value added traffic information A great quantity of raw data to process in order to enhance new services such as Travel Times, Traffic Forecast, etc. No more total manual control of the information A large diversity of medias (VMS, internet, Wap, IVR, Radio 107.7FM ...) Context Why deal with quality? Jérôme FERRE –- p. 4

  5. Dissemination Collection Communication centre Context SAPN Information network Processing Common platform SSA Services enhancement Jérôme FERRE –- p. 5

  6. Quality for collection Quality for raw data Quality for processing information Quality for traffic management tools Quality for traffic information services development Quality for dissemination Etc ... Needs Quality must be along the "Chain" (Collection, Processing, Dissemination)! Jérôme FERRE –- p. 6

  7. to improve the quality of raw data to improve processing to guarantee the availability of traffic management tools to integrate many types of data and enhance services with a limited number of sources to guarantee the availability of end user traffic information services to evaluate the quality of the whole « Chain » SAPN Objectives Jérôme FERRE –- p. 7

  8. Development of new IR radar counting stations with GPRS communication => Simple and robust solution (non-intrusive), Autonomous (Energy and communication), Facilitated maintenance, Low costs permit installation of a high density of stations. SAPN Implementation SAPN actions for quality in Data Collection: Jérôme FERRE –- p. 8

  9. SAPN Implementation Jérôme FERRE –- p. 9

  10. SAPN has established a common platform for collecting traffic and weather data: Collection of all data coming from different motorway roadside systems, regardless of their nature (Traffic, Weather, Tolls). Apply processes to raw data from roadside systems in order to guarantee the quality. Distribution of data from a unique platform to « user client applications ». Supervision and management of roadside data collection systems. Display of raw information under a single format for different users. SAPN Implementation SAPN actions for raw data quality : Jérôme FERRE –- p. 10

  11. CommonPlatform SSA Supervision Processes Collection Travel times Distribution Traffic and weather forecasts Display Management SAPN Implementation Jérôme FERRE –- p. 11

  12. To guarantee the availability of traffic management tools SAPN has completed the resilience and robustness of the core of its traffic management system. To help the TIC operators in the management of events Development of an Expert System proposing action plans to the operators, Limitation of manual input, Centralisation of the Alarms and Alerts. SAPN Implementation SAPN actions for quality in Data Processing : Jérôme FERRE –- p. 12

  13. To guarantee the availability of end user traffic information services SAPN has a common and secure dissemination platform on different medias (Web, Wap, SVI, etc.) To evaluate the quality on the whole « Chain » All information processed for different media (services) is tracked, and saved. SAPN Implementation SAPN actions for quality in data dissemination : Jérôme FERRE –- p. 13

  14. Thanks to these actions : SAPN is now capable of tracking the quality of information, Currently 100 % of raw data is checked, The raw data database is complete at 98%, Proving a solid base for information processing and service delivery, Efficient traffic management. SAPN customers survey shows that 93% of the drivers judged reliable “traffic information services” Conclusion Jérôme FERRE –- p. 14

  15. The need for quality is very important for traffic management and for end user traffic services Quality extends from data collection to data dissemination What has been done by SAPN in France could be done elsewhere in Europe For SAPN, the implementation of quality control is a first step for enhancing quality: Quality must be a continuous process Conclusion Jérôme FERRE –- p. 15
