  4. Apocalyptic Literature • What is it? • A highly symbolic style of writing in which hidden truths are revealed within a story. Revelation is often delivered by an angel • What is the structure? • Narrative • Delivered by an otherworldly being to a human • Connect reality with a supernatural world • What are the types? *Historic symbolic* Otherworldly journeys • Where is it found? Book of Daniel

Compare & Contrast • Both apocalyptic and wisdom literature answer the same question, “How should we live to stay in the right relationship with God? • Wisdom looks to the past and our relationship to God as creator. What has God done? • Apocalyptic looks to the future. What is God about to do?

Song of Songs • Unknown author, originally thought to be King Solomon • Collection of love poems • Affirmation of the beauty of love and the goodness of human sexuality • Human love is a gift from God • Passion and beauty are a reflection of God’s love for us • Love dialogue between man and woman • Reflects the love between God and Israel AND later, Jesus and the church

  14. Some Wisdom Themes • Book of Job • God is beyond human knowledge and that some things will never be understood, including suffering. God does not want us to suffer. God does not cause suffering. We can blame God or turn to God. • Other books • Life is not always fair • There are no easy answers • You can’t take it with you!! • Seize the day • Talks about “last things” eschatology; Death, judgment, heaven, hell • Directions for wise living • Respect for experience • Establish contrast of good and evil, wise and foolish
