  1. Good Instruction Is Always a Great Start in Any Discipline Americans, just like the citizens of other countries all over the world, enjoy competition and therefore many different sports disciplines right from track and field to swimming and various shooting activities such as one or more of the different shooting competitions they can partake of, such as, for example, skeet. Skeet is a well-known discipline among shooting enthusiasts in the US in states such as Texas and Tennessee – and elsewhere, and forms part of a greater category that also includes trap shooting and sporting clays to all form part of clay pigeon shooting. These disciplines are offered to those shooters that are keen on competition shooting as a separate discipline, or because it may gradually ease them into wing-shooting, the popular activity of hunting birds in flight. Therefore skeet and similar disciplines are offered as activities that simulate birds in flight. Of course it helps to first shoot at clay targets before you take to wing-shooting itself – even though many skeet shooters enjoy the activity on its own as a separate discipline. All of these – skeet, trap and sporting clays are taught by experienced instructors that offer these disciplines and the instruction from facilities, or shooting schools. Every instructor or school has their own set-up, but the best ones will always make sure they can offer such instruction to include both theoretical and practical instruction. They will make sure they advertise their services and availability either in the local press or on a well visited website so that students can form an idea of who they are, what exactly they offer, as well as information about the credentials of their instructors. For example: many would most likely agree that it suits them best to receive their skeet and other instruction from an experienced, knowledgeable instructor, even one that has taken part in skeet competitions themselves. This may be a personal preference, but for many it may be a great deciding factor. Some of these schools or facilities may offer different kinds of instruction – not only for skeet and related activities. Some may offer other forms of instruction to suit the student; it all depends, and therefore one would consider that facility that offers what you are after. When it comes to skeet and its related disciplines, for example, it is advised – even important - to arrive with the most appropriate shotgun from a leading brand such as the well-supported which is famed for being a leading shotgun for trap, skeet and sporting clays. Of course there are others too such as the Beretta and Blaser. It may be a very good idea to establish beforehand from the shooting school if they may want to recommend a good gun for skeet or the kind of instruction you are looking for. Make sure you know how long the course is, and what ammunition – and how many rounds – you should bring so that you get the best out of the training. The skeet instruction itself is offered according to a pre-designed course where the instructor offers all the important theory for his students to benefit from when they are offered the practical instruction afterwards, or he may alternate between the theoretical and the practical. Skeet and similar disciplines use the idea of simulating birds in flight as their basis; therefore the skeet course is designed to introduce the student to a simulation of flying birds. Students are taught to shoot at flying clay targets from different positions, generally speaking seven, which are arranged in a semi circle plus an additional position somewhere in the middle of these seven.

  2. Targets are thrown into the air from two stations and students are then given the opportunity to shoot. Skeet is a great way of easing into wing-shooting; however, for many thousands world-wide it stands on its own as a discipline and is enjoyed for just that: as skeet.
