Early Life • Born named Thomas Stearns Eliot • Born September 26th, 1888 • Died January 4th, 1965 • Went to Harvard and in 1910 earned his master’s degree from the university and settled in Paris to study at Sorbonne. • Returned to Harvard in 1911 as a doctoral student in philosophy • Went back to Europe and settled in England in 1914

Family • His father was a successful entrepreneur • His mother was a poet • Youngest of 7 children • Married his first wife Vivienne June 26th, 1915 and in 1947 she passed away • Married his second wife EsmeFletcheron on Janurary 10th, 1957 • Was sent to Merton College, Oxford University on a scholarship in 1914

Poetic Style • He had a very difficult style of writing which is hard to interpret • He liked writing in other languages • Used many allusions • Was not popular at the beginning of his career because of the complexity of his poems • He was a very knowledgeable man and his understanding was above many of his readers
