  3. Our Mission Empowering our members to take the Three Angels’ Messages to all the world

  4. Our Goal To grow our church to 500 active members, then spread out with a continual focus of church-planting and discipling

  5. Our Reference Guide The Old and New Testaments of the Sacred Scriptures

  6. “He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping (“perfecting” KJV) of the saints for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11, 12

  7. “He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors/teachers, for the equipping (“perfecting” KJV) of the saints for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11, 12

  8. “Few sermons were preached by Christ. He was the great Teacher, and crowds gathered wherever He went to listen to His instruction, and He taught as one having authority, and knew that He was teaching the truth.” The Voice in Speech and Song, p. 232

  9. “He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping (“perfecting” KJV) of the saints for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11, 12

  10. The “equipping” of the saints Katartismos “furnish or equip” From katartizo “to fit out, equip, put in order, arrange, repair, restore” Hence, to “prepare for service” so as to fulfill a specific function

  11. Our purpose, then, is to provide the right “equipment” so that the saints can do the work of ministry In this series, we will focus on furnishing you with information relating to the Bible

  12. The word “Bible” comes from biblion meaning “book” (compare “bibliography” and “biblioteca”) The word “Scripture” comes from “writing” (compare “prescription,” “manuscript,” “transcript,” “conscription,” “scribe,” “describe,” etc.)

  13. Satan’s attack has always been against the word of God Genesis 3 “Yea, hath God said,” or, “Did God really say?…” An attack against God’s word led to disobedience to His command, which brought about disaster That strategy has never changed!

  14. Satan’s attack as we near the end will be against the word of God The supreme question will be, What is the ultimate authority? God’s Word, or man’s word? That question will be framed in the context of which day of worship to honor

  15. Where did our Bible come from? What is its purpose? Can it be trusted? How should it be used? What tools are available? What will be the result of proper use?

  16. What translation should I use? What about the “other” books in some Bibles? Ellen G. White and the Bible

  17. “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.” Isaiah 40:8 “The Scripture cannot be broken.” John 10:35

  18. “Last eve I paused beside the blacksmith’s door, And heard the anvil ring the vesper chime; Then looking in, I saw upon the floor, Old hammers, worn with beating years of time

  19. ‘How many anvils have you had,’ said I, ‘To wear and batter all these hammers so?’ ‘Just one,’ said he, and then with twinkling eye, ‘The anvil wears the hammers out, you know.’

  20. And so, I thought, the Anvil of God’s Word For ages skeptic blows have beat upon; Yet, though the noise of falling blows was heard, The Anvil is unharmed, the hammers gone.” Attributed to John Clifford

  21. “We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts.” II Peter 1:19

  22. “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man; but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” II Peter 1:20, 21, KJV

  23. Holy men wrote as they were inspired by the Holy Spirit About 40 authors penned the 66 books They were of varied backgrounds, experience, occupations and education Some wrote one, a few wrote several

  24. “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” II Peter 1:20, 21

  25. “moved (phero: to carry or bear Compare “pheresis”) by the Spirit.” “Bring them (five loaves, two fishes) to Me” Matthew 14:18 “Bring him (demon possessed) to Me” Matthew 17:17 “They brought all were diseased” Mark 1:32

  26. “moved (to carry or bear) by the Spirit.” “moved” as by being influenced; but it can also include: Paul taken to third heaven John taken to New Jerusalem Ezekiel taken to temple Daniel taken to Medo-Persia

  27. When did our Bible originate? Moses wrote about 3,500 years ago Coincidental with the introduction of alphabet writing The Bible view and the evolutionistic view of human history disagree

  28. When did our Bible originate? For nearly ½ of human history, there was no alphabetic writing! Is this a boast for the advancement of humanity, or a confession of weakened mentality?

  29. When did our Bible originate? About 40 writers contributed to the 66 books Writing over about 1600 years on the most provocative topic—religion! Yet, exhibiting an amazing harmony There were 40 writers, but One Author

  30. What Is Its Purpose? II Timothy 3:15-17 Psalm 119:9, 105, 130 Isaiah 8:20 Hebrews 4:12 Matthew 4:4

  31. “From childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise (sophia: compare “philosophy,” “sophistry,” “sophomore,” etc.) for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

  32. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” II Timothy 3:15-17

  33. “All (pan) Scripture (graphe) is given by inspiration (theopneustos) of God, and is profitable for doctrine (didaskalia), for reproof, for correction (epanorthosis), for instruction (paideia) in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped (exartizo) for every good work.” II Timothy 3:16, 17

  34. “All (pan) Scripture” Compare: “pan-american,” “pantheism,” “panorama,” “pandemonium (all + demon + place of),” “panacea,” etc.

  35. “All (pan) Scripture” Some have only a “partial” Bible For some, only the first 5 books For some, only the New Testament is useful; for some only what follows Acts 2 For some, most of, or the entire of book of Revelation is excluded

  36. “All (pan) Scripture” “Every word of God is pure.” Proverbs 30:5

  37. “All Scripture (graphe)” What is something “written with sound”? What is something “written with light”? What is something “written by yourself”?

  38. Bible writers were “inspired by God” Theopneustos: “God-breathed” “God” + “breathe” (Compare: pneumatic, pneumonia, etc.) “Inspire” “to breathe into” Compare: Spirit, perspire, respire, aspire, conspire, expire

  39. Prophets’ minds were inspired. Their thoughts were inspired and they expressed the thoughts in their own language, drawing from their own vocabulary and life experience. This is “thought (or plenary) inspiration,” in contrast to “word (or verbal) inspiration.” Luke’s Gospel is different than John’s!

  40. Prophets’ minds were inspired. Though the prophets expressed the thoughts with words that sprung from their own life experience, the entire process was under the direction and guidance of the Spirit, so that the result was the “word of God.” Paul could draw a lesson from the fact that “Seed” was singular. Galatians 3:16

  41. The Bible is the bringing together the divine and the human Thus, just as the incarnate Savior, the living Word of God, so also the written Word of God, the sacred Scriptures, represents a combination of the divine and the human

  42. “All Scripture…is profitable for doctrine (didaskalia) This word means “teaching” It is often translated “doctrine” Our word “didactic” comes from this word If you remove the Bible’s teachings, there is not much left!

  43. “All Scripture is…profitable for correction (epanorthosis)” Ep (“on”) an (“again”) ortho (“straighten”) sis (“process of”) What kind of dentist straightens teeth? What kind of doctor straightens bones? What is “straight teaching”?

  44. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction Paideia: from paideuo (“child” + “good”) “Training, nurture, educating” Can include discipline, chastening

  45. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped (exartizo: “outfit,” or “furnish”) for every good work.” II Timothy 3:16, 17
