  1. Reconstruction of the firn thermal processes from the firn temperature measurements Olga Sergienko with great thanks to Douglas R. MacAyeal, Jonathan E. Thom, Kelly M. Brunt and L. Mac Cathles (UofC, UofWisc)

  2. Outline • Motivation of this study • Data from iceberg C16 (Ross Sea) • Reconstruction of the firn thermal processes • Conclusions

  3. Animation of Larsen B break-up, January 31 to March 7, 2002 from National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC)

  4. Larsen B Ice Shelf, Landsat 7 image, February 21, 2000 from NSIDS

  5. Iceberg A43B, Weddell Sea Dec 31, 2003 Jan 22, 2004 Feb 22, 2004 Larsen B style disintegration Extensive melting Initial dry conditions

  6. Long-term observation system on iceberg C16 (Ross Sea) 2004 2005 Pyranometer Thermistors AWS

  7. If we want to model this… + boundary conditions

  8. Density-depth profiles

  9. 2 cm Ice layers Nov 2005 Nov 2004 20 cm

  10. Firn temperature at 20 cm depth and atmospheric temperature

  11. Firn temperature at 20 cm depth and atmospheric temperature

  12. Analytical solution for the heat-diffusion equation with periodic boundary condition

  13. Reconstructed heat diffusivity at 7-15 cm depth

  14. Reconstructed heat diffusivity at 15-22 cm depth

  15. Reconstructed heat diffusivity at 22-35 cm depth

  16. Reconstructed heat diffusivity at 35-45 cm depth

  17. Reconstructed heat diffusivity at 45-57 cm depth

  18. Reconstructed heat diffusivity at 57-70 cm depth

  19. Reconstructed heat diffusivity at 70-85 cm depth

  20. Reconstructed heat diffusivity at 85-110 cm depth

  21. Conclusions • C16 experienced extensive surface melting during 04/05 Austral summer. • Thermistor string provides temporal and spatial information about subsurface melting. • A network of thermistor strings is required to study surface melting in Antarctic region.
