  1. National Partnerships: The National Education Association CDC Arthritis Grantees Meeting Nora L. Howley NEA Health Information Network

Who are NEA members? • They are 3.2 million school employees • They are teachers, bus drivers, clerical staff, food service workers, paraeducators, skilled trades, IT, custodians, school health staff, higher education faculty, retirees, and students • They work in 50 states and overseas • They are in the majority of the nation’s school districts

  3. The Health Information Network Our mission is to improve the health and safety of the school community by developing and disseminating information and programs that educate and empower school professionals and positively impact the lives of students

  4. How we achieve our mission • Training at conferences • Organizing for change • Creating publications that answer questions • Providing online courses • Responding to members

  5. Some more about NEA members • The majority are female • They are aging • Many are dealing with weight related health problems • They are under a lot of stress • When we talk to them they all seem to be affected by arthritis or know someone who is • In informal discussions they seem fatalistic about their health

  6. The premise • NEA members are agood target audience for the Arthritis Self-Management Kit • They don’t know about it • They don’t know how to get it • If we make it available they will take it (this is a variation on “build it and they will come.”

  7. The Program • 250 kits • 50 free • 200 at a discount • 2 web surveys

  8. Questions • Will members request the kit? • Who orders the kit? • Will this create additional demand? • What happens when the discounts are expired? • Will members use the kit?

  9. Questions • How is the kit used? • What else would be useful? • What other arthritis management activities are they doing? • What is their overall rating?

  10. The challenges • Delayed start due to challenges in getting kits • We ran an ad, then had no kits • Social media may not be where these people are • Interest has been slow • Does this mean that there is no interest? NO!

  11. What has worked • As of July 5, NEA HIN has distributed 49 free kits • Targeted and personal outreach leads to kit requests • Recipients are responding to survey-sort of • First survey went to 35 people and 20 responded (83%) • Second survey went to 18 people and 6 responded (30%)

  15. What else have you done? (N=20) • “Regular exercise, cherry juice and OTC analgesics” • “NSAID and yoga” • “Exercise and Tylenol…Celebrex makes my hands swell” • “Tai Chi and I have integrated the sleep recommendations

What else have you done? • “…took the self test and have written long term goals to address pain management…consulted with my health care provider and replaced my NSAID with Acetaminophen on an experimental basis…have begun using the exercise CD ..and have been walking 4 times per week for half an hour…more aware of my posture…reduced my caffeine consumption…”
