  3. OS defence • Options available to data-junkies • NAS appliance • Amahi (over some Linux variant) • Ubuntu variant • Windows box (vanilla) • Others? • Windows Home Server

  4. WHS specific benefits • Single control point for: • Client file backup • Automated/configurable redundancy on server • Network wide administration, access and sharing • Pre-built connector client • Monitors client health • Extensions to core functionality via add-in’s

Hardware Selection • Mainly the remainder of a four year old workstation • AMD 3200+ 64bit CPU • 2GB RAM • nVidia 6600 • WD Raptor OS HDD • 2 x WD 250GB data HDD previously sync’d using Second Copy) • Additions: • 400GB 7200rpm OS HDD • 2 x WD GreenPower 5400rpm 1.5TB HDD • Deletions: • Swap WD Raptor for 7200rpm 400GB OS drive • Changes when necessary… • PCIe SATA card • Others have written base-case owner-builder guides

Current loadset • Add-Ins • WHS disk management: • Better disk utilisation data • HDD health • Applying aliases to individual disk • Physical mapping via wireframe • Lights Out • Power control for the WHS box based on client status • Software • TrueCrypt • Password Safe • Wizmo • Anti-virus software

  7. Observations / Issues • Simplest installation ever, although slow • Add-In’s wouldn’t uninstall • Won’t shut down gracefully • Add-In documentation not totally ace • Printer driver support average • Some client pop ups are annoying

  8. Future stuff • WHS will also act as: • DHCP server to network clients (Add-in exists) • Sync point to Live Mesh (WHS & Mesh teams are talking and integration is being discussed, but no deliverables yet) • Backup to TrueCrypt external volumes for offsite backup (via BDBB add-in – currently evaluating) • Archiving Recorded TV from the HTPC (available in PowerPack3 – now deferred) • Act as a print server
