  2. SD 71 Staff Asbestos Awareness Training 2016-2017 WSBC requires all staff to undergo annual training with respect to the potential for exposure to asbestos within our worksites, the health impacts of exposure and immediate actions to be taken by staff if damage occurs to building materials is suspected to contain ACM (asbestos containing materials)within our sites. Training will be lead at each site by building Principals or site supervisors. Training is presented through an on-line module and is best done in a group or whole staff setting in a computer lab. All staff must sign-on and complete the on-line test to meet WSBC requirements. Staff unable to attend the group training are required to complete the on-line module prior to Oct 31 of each year.

  3. Purpose Protect all individuals from harmful exposure to asbestos fibres Define Roles & Responsibilities Risk Identification & Assessment Control Procedures Education & Training

  4. Asbestos is… a naturally occurring fibrous material that was a popular building material from the 50s to 90s. It was used extensively because it is an insulator, has good fire protection properties, has tensile strength and is resistant to chemical erosion Often mixed with other materials… ie drywall compound Most likely present if you work in building built before 1990 http://www.hiddenkiller.ca/what-is-asbestos.asp

  5. Common Uses: Spray applied fireproofing Mechanical Insulation Linoleum Floor Tiles Drywall Taping Compound Vermiculite Asbestos cement board, tiles, pipes Textured decorative coating http://www.hiddenkiller.ca/where-is-it-found.asp

  6. Health Dangers of ACM: Asbestos related diseases will not affect an individual immediately, they often take a long time to develop, but once diagnosed it is often too late for corrective treatment. There is a need to protect yourself now. Mesothelioma – cancer affects the lining of lungs & digestive tract Asbestos-related Lung Cancer Asbestosis – scarring condition of the lungs Pleural Thickening – lining of lung thickens & swells http://www.hiddenkiller.ca/what-it-can-do.asp

  7. Principals, Managers, Supervisors Inform and train employees with respect to asbestos at each site. Prohibit work that disturbs building materials until work is approved by Director of Operations Ensure safe work procedures are followed & proper Personal Protective gear is used Initiate investigations of exposure incidents Complete the Asbestos Exposure Registry and appropriate incident reports.

  8. Employees Must Use equipment provided for their protection Follow safe work procedures as provided by SD71 Inquire prior to disturbing building materials Attend/participate in education sessions regarding asbestos Participate in accident investigations of exposure incidents

  9. Working in Areas of Asbestos Containing Material UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL DISTRICT EMPLOYEES PERFORM ASBESTOS REMOVAL/REMEDIATION Areas containing asbestos have been identified in all District buildings. A Red ACM Binder has been developed and placed in every school and is reviewed and updated annually. This Red binder is on file in each site office. Ask for the “Asbestos” binder. IF YOU SUSPECT MATERIAL CONTAINING ASBESTOS HAS BEEN DISTURBED CONTACT YOUR SITE ADMINISTRATOR IMMEDIATELY School Admin contacts SD71 Operations, the area is sealed off, staff and students are transferred from the area

  10. Building Materials Containing Asbestos in SD71 Asbestos containing materials in all SD71 sites in inspected annually to ensure that it is encapsulated and does not pose a health concern to workers or students The majority of Asbestos containing materials within our sites is encapsulated within flooring, behind painted walls or in pipe insulation above T-Bar ceilings or in mechanical spaces. Site specific details is contained within each ACM (Red Binder) and can be accessed by asking your building Principal or site supervisor. BE SAFE, ASK FIRST!

  11. In the event of suspected damage to ACM at your work site… Notify your School Administrator In the event of such a disturbance the Administrator, or their designate, will:  Consult the Red ACM Binder or online database to see if the area has been identified as containing asbestos material;  Immediately contact Operations at (250) 338-7475;  Contact the Custodial Supervisor to seal off the area or room;  Notify staff and students to stay out of the damaged area.

  12. CUSTODIAN  Damp down the debris with water or wet cloths;  Close door of classroom or tape off hallway etc.;  Post signage which clearly indicates that the area or material may contain asbestos and therefore DO NOT ENTER;  Contact the Supervisor of Operations 250-338-7475

  13. OPERATIONS STAFF Upon receiving notification of a possible release of asbestos containing material at a school or work site Operations staff will:  Consult the Hazardous Materials Binder at the school to see if the area has been identified as containing asbestos material;  Immediately contact an Operations Supervisor, or Manager, or the Director of Operations;  Attend to the site to ensure it has been made as safe as possible prior to the arrival of the external contractor for asbestos abatement;  Follow SD 71 Safe Operating Procedure 16-001.
