  1. Congenital Heart Defects Lydia Fairburn

  2. Congenital Heart Defects • Heart defects at birth • Effects about 40,000 babies per year • About 4,800 babies are born with CCHD (critical congenital heart disease). • Medication, open heart surgery, or heart transplant.

  3. Causes • Mother’s medical conditions • diabetes, lupus, rubella, obesity • Genes or Chromosomes • down syndrome, turner syndrome, Noonan syndrome, velocardiofacial syndrome, alagille syndrome • Mother smokes, drinks, or takes certain medication during pregnancy.

  4. Atrial Septal Defect • Hole in the septum of the heart between the right and left atriums. Oxygen-rich blood and oxygen- poor blood leak into the wrong side of the heart. • Treatment depends on size of hole http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/

  5. Complete Atrioventricular Canal Defect • Large hole in center of septum connecting all four chambers. Oxygen-rich blood and oxygen-poor blood mix. Too much blood pumped into lungs. • Open heart surgery http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/

  6. d-Transposition of the Great Arteries • The two arteries are connected to the wrong sides of the heart. Oxygen poor blood being pumped to the body and oxygen rich blood being pumped to lungs. • Open heart surgery http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/

  7. I-Transposition of the Great Arteries • Left and Right ventricles are reversed. Correct arteries are attached (pulmonary artery has oxygen poor blood and aorta has oxygen rich blood) • Not as dangerous as d-transposition. http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/

  8. Patent DuctusArteriosis • Blood skips circulation to lungs because ductusateriosis never closes. Blood is never oxygenated. • Open heart surgery http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/

  9. Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection • Veins from lungs attach to abnormal places on the heart and it causes oxygenated and oxygen poor blood to mix. • Open heart surgery http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/
