Vocabulary List #1 • apparent adj.: • visible. • Example: It was apparent that Sammy was going surfing. • sullen adj.: • grumpy; resentful. • Example: Sammy’s girlfriend Lu Lu was sullen because he wasn’t • spending enough time with her. • impulsen.: • urge. • Example: Sammy did not feel an impulse to hang out with Lu Lu. • 4. retrieved v.: • got and brought back. • Example: Lu Lu retrieved Sammy’s surfboard from her car and • threw it at him.

  2. emerged v.: • came out. • Example: Sammy emerged from Lu Lu’s house and headed • for the beach. • 6. misled v.: • fooled; led to believe something wrong. • Example: Lu Lu felt she had been misled regarding the strength • of Sammy’s feelings for her. • 7. tangible adj.: • capable of being seen and felt. • Example: Sammy’s surfboard was a tangible object that he felt • great love for. • refute v.: • prove wrong using evidence. • Example: No one could refute the love Sammy felt for surfing.

Example: What Lu Lu saw when she looked through her binoculars was the deterioration of her relationship with Sammy. 14. hypothesis n.: theory to be proved. Example: Her hypothesis that he no longer loved her was proved correct when she saw him with a girl in a red bikini. 15. introspectiveadj.: looking inward. Example: Lu Lu cried all of the way home and then recorded her thoughts in an introspective entry into her journal.
