  17. Thrive Hive and Reward Store The Thrive Hive is a store where students can not only purchase prizes or things they want, but also things they might need to thrive. The term thrive means to “flourish and grow well”. The items we carry in our store help our students do just that. Items we carry for this purpose are things such as school supplies, food (similar items to what would go in a buddy bac-pac), health/hygiene, seasonal clothing, etc. Our goal in allowing students to purchase these items is to provide them with necessities to help take care of some of their immediate needs in order to help them focus on being successful students. The PBIS reward store has also had a positive impact on our student body with behavior. Students with the use of Hornet Bucks are able to buy rewards such as: hat pass, sit in the teacher chair, FMS rockstar, coffee shop hot chocolate, teacher helper, cool tube at lunch, lunch seconds, nice outside/eat outside and many more. Having the Thrive Hive and PBIS reward store has helped decrease negative behavior, helped increase instruction time, and increased the positive culture at FMS. The store is open every morning 7:30 to 7:45. Students can also email Mrs. Yates, Mrs. Horstmeier or Ms. Jo for an appointment during the day. We also accept donations if you have items you no longer want in your home.

  18. Chromebook Expectations There will be three Chromebooks per classroom for students to use if they do not have a CB or if they forgot or did not charge the CB. If a student has multiple instances of not bringing a CB or not charging the CB, please notify parent and admin. If it continues, please write a referral for not being prepared for class. If a student breaks his/her CB then they need to take it to the library to fill out a work order. Ms. Lairmore will work with tech to get it fixed. In the meantime, students will use the classroom CB as needed. GoGuardian All staff will have GoGuardian up when students are working individually on CB’s and monitor use. Follow the PBIS matrix for violations.

  19. Student Planners Students will have a planner with gold folder that goes home each day. • Teachers should have students write the learning target/independent practice/next steps in the planner the last two minutes of each period. • All students must have planner as a hall pass with the date and time filled out in the back w/teacher signature. • If a student loses a planner, student can use any sort of “planner” to write assignments and use as a hall pass.

  21. They will explain the accommodations and modifications to you, and it is your responsibility to make sure these are being implemented in your classroom at all times. If you are planning to test and you have a student that requires testing accommodations outside of the classroom, you must let the case manager know at least one week before the test will take place. You will have a SpEd teacher in your weekly Grade Level TEAM meetings. This is a great time to get questions answered concerning special education. The SpEd teachers welcome your questions at anytime. Special Education IEPs There are five Special Education Teachers at FMS: Meg Plybon, Catlin Wisdom, Angie Raebel, Katherine Winfrey, and Tessa Burgher. Each of these teachers has a caseload. If you have a student in your class who has an Individual Education Plan (IEP), their Case Manager will provide you with a copy of their accommodations and modifications before the start of the year.

  22. Student 504s 504 or SPED Referrals by Parents If a parent/guardian asks for a 504 or IEP, immediately notify the counselors and principal. (immediately as in within the minute:) We are under strict time bound guidelines for referrals. FMS has two school counselors, Marena Crawford and Stephanie Horstmeier. These two ladies also serve as 504 Coordinators for students with a 504. The two counselors divide up students by last name. Mrs. Horstmeier works with students last name A-L and Mrs. Crawford works with students M-Z. If you have a student in your class who has a 504 plan, their assigned counselor/504 coordinator will provide you with a copy of their accommodation plan before the start of the year. They will explain the accommodations to you, and it is your responsibility to make sure these are being implemented in your classroom at all times. Students that have a 504 plan will also have a 504 icon in SIS. A teacher can click on that icon and also find the 504 plan there as well. You will have both counselors in your weekly Grade Level TEAM meetings. This is a great time to get questions answered concerning students and their 504 plans

  24. Advisory/Homeroom

  25. ISS Procedures • Teachers are expected to provide all work needed for that student the day before by the end of 8th Hour. There is a bin in next to the copy machine in Karen's office to place the assignments. Also note if they will need a book,Chromebook, Google Classroom, worksheets, etc For example if Beth Houf is in ISS for the next 5 days please have her work before the end of the day before so the office has work prepared for her tomorrow. • If the student has an IEP/504 and has modifications, you the teacher need to make the modifications. Example: If Beth Houf needs assignments shortened, you need to shorten them. • Realize that the student will be in ISS the entire day, so send enough work for the student to complete, but don't just send busy work. For example, saying the student needs to do math problems 1-10 and it will only take them 15 minutes to complete the problems, you are setting the ISS Instructor up for failure. You will need to remember the student still needs whatever to succeed in your class.

  26. ISS Procedures • Please email Karen and Mr. Cannon if the assignment is on Google Classroom instead of a paper assignment. Please give specific assignment instructions so that Mr. Cannon will be able to know what you expect from the student. • Please stop by during your plan to make sure the student understands the assignment and build that relationship. Also, if the student was sent out of your room, this is a great time to discuss why their actions were not acceptable in your classroom and how in the future we can develop a plan so the issue will not come up again. The last thing you want is the student to come back to class without that relationship, realize students will not learn if they think you don't care about them. • Remember, that we have ISS in our building, so we need to make sure that we have work provided for our students and help make the student successful, since they are missing out on classroom instruction. • Sometimes there are situations where a student will be assign ISS in the middle of the day. It would be a good idea to have work available everyday in case this happens with one of your students. • Do not have students bring work to the ISS room.

  31. Curriculum Supports to be ready for Standards Based Grading This section is to assist you as you are taking your content standards and writing learning targets. Why SBG... Standards Based Grading

  32. SBG: Depth of Knowledge Depth of Knowledge Below is a DOK chart that lists the levels of knowledge (rigor) and sample verbs to use when writing learning targets.

  33. SBG: Unpacking Standards • List all the essential skills (verbs and action phrases) needed to demonstrate the standard. • Look at your standards and circle the verbs to identify what the standard wants the students to do. • Then underline the action phrases for the specific information the students need to demonstrate mastery. • Rewrite the standard like bullet points using each verb as a separate objective for the specific requirement of the standard. • Example: • Support claims with logical reasoning with relevant evidence • Use accurate and credible sources • Demonstrate an understanding of the topic or text 2. Identify the DOK levels of each skill. • Evaluate each learning target using the DOK Chart to make sure you are moving beyond recall and having the students think deeper. • Example: • Support claims with logical reasoning with relevant evidence, DOK 2 • Use accurate and credible sources, DOK 1 • Demonstrate an understanding of the topic or text, DOK 3

  34. SBG: Unpacking Standards cont. 3. Extend the learning progression by building cognitively complex target(s) OR what to do when students already know the information: • Brainstorm targets that extend learning and require students to apply and integrate the content of the standards. • Cognitively complex target(s) require students to engage in higher levels of thinking than the academic standards so consider verbs that are identified in level 4 of the DOK chart above. • You may want to consider ways the learning goal targets might be used in the real world. • DO NOT add new content because students should only extend the level of processing related to the content knowledge they already possess. 4. Integrate the remaining knowledge and other basic processes to provide the underpinning necessary to reach the essential skills. • The essential knowledge (nouns) identified in the standards when unpacking them determines the specific vocabulary needed for recall and proficiency. • New terminology implied to be added to a list of vocabulary needed for a student to become proficient. • Once you have compiled the list, determine which terms are essential for growth and how they can be connected to previous information taught or background knowledge. • Identify other foundational learning targets that will assist who struggle access the standard. Those targets should be used to help a student move toward proficiency in a standard. • Example, Using the targets above in step 1 for guidance a student might need to show proficiency on: • Difference between a sources of information • Difference between a fact and opinion • Identifying a topic of research • Identifying a claim
