New Deal FDIC - The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation – insured bank deposits for up to $2500 Suspended Gold Standard – took the US off of the gold standard Repealed Prohibition – 21st amendment repealed the 18th amendment legalizing alcohol give states more tax revenue Agricultural Adjustment Act – paid farmers not to produce as much food so that food prices would rise so farmers could make a profit Public Works Administration – Roosevelt “primed the pump” by spending 3.3 billion dollars to build 35,000 public works projects. The Federal government became the largest employer in the country

Unemployment Insurance – payments paid by the government to people who are unemployed Wagner Act – stopped private businesses from being able to stop their workers from creating labor unions Minimum Wage – sets the lowest wage an employer can pay an employee Glass – Steagall Act – placed regulations of banks that they couldn’t invest in stock market

  8. Securities and Exchange Commision The SEC main goal is regulating the nation’s securities industry (stock markets)

  9. National Recovery Administration Put business and unions under complete control of the government

  10. Supreme Court overturns the NRA The Supreme Court unanimously declares the NRA unconstitutional because it violates the separation of powers clause

  11. Roosevelt threatens to pack the court The Supreme Court overturned some key parts of the New Deal so Roosevelt attempted to pass a law that would increase the number of judges on the Supreme Court so he could shift the political balance of the Court

  12. Social Security Social Security provides financial benefits to the elderly, disabled and widows. Payments to retirees are financed by a payroll tax on current workers and employers. The current age of retirement to receive Social Security is 62

  45. Milton Friedman Nobel Friedman was an economist working for the government when he started to believe that the government was hurting the economy more than helping it. Freidman goes on to become the leader of the Chicago school of economics which advocated for low taxes, lower government spending, less regulations and that social welfare causes more problems than it fixes. Friedman also believed that it was the Federal Reserve that caused the Great Depression. He won the Nobel peace Prize for economics in 1976. The Chicago School is considered the Americanized version of the Austrian School and anti-Keynesian
