Satyr • This play was for merriment during the serious competition • Each playwright would submit 3 plays and one satyr. • The satyr would loosen up the crowd and was often called a tragic comedy. • It made fun of the failure of others and even recreated some myths.
Aeschylus • Born 525 BC • Playwright and Soldier • Father of Tragedy • Wrote over Ninety plays only 7 remain • Made characters interact with each other not only the chorus • Created the first Trilogy! • Won 14 competitions
Sophocles • Born 497 BC • Playwright • Added third actor • Wrote 123 Plays only 7 have survived • Won 24 competitions • Reduced the importance of the Chorus
Euripides • Born in 480 BC • Playwright • Won 4 competitions • Wrote 92 plays 18 have survived • Made mythological heros more human in his plays. • Focused on the inner lives of charcters. • Portrayed people with sympathy and showed society as having victims.
Assignments Week 13 • Write 3 Biography Cards • Write a short satyr to fill in a missing scene in one myth. • Or have them act out a scene of comedy: • Have someone make a mess out of the tool box while someone else is trying to clean it up: • Lavern and Shirley did this a lot You can find many shows that demonstrate this…I love Lucy etc. • They could be an American asking for directions in Rome to get to the Acropolis: have one person send them to the sea and one to the hill. How does the person act etc. How can the body show confusion, frustration, humor, etc.? How would a mask help? • Read part of one tragedy and comedy.
Week 13 Craft • Make an Ancient Greek Theatre Mask • Can make it either comedy or tragedy • Would be best if it could be used in your satyr.
