Key Activities and Updates • Providing agriculture inputs and extension services • Focus on food security and right to housing • Dealing with Land policy issues • Working Group for Women’s Land Ownership (WGWLO) • Right to Food Security Campaign • Protecting natural resources • Promoting bio diversity for securing basic livelihood • NyaySamities (Justice Committees) of the federations dealing strongly with violence cases • In spite of number of socio–political changes, all 4 districts ensured increase of new members and leadership

Strengthening Women’s federations • Focus on • Meeting regularly • Handling Accounts • Monitoring meeting agendas to make them more qualitative • Executive committee members’ decision to be paid honorarium for attending meetings was subsequently revoked • It was decided that any honorarium be paid only if the work done by the members in the field exceeds a certain number of days

Update: Annual General Meetings of the federation in Rajula (Coastal Gujarat) • Held in May • 250 women participated at their own costs • Entire programmemanaged and executed by federation women themselves • Agenda items • Selection/election of the President and Vice President of the federation • Sharing of the annual progress report and financials of the federation • Strengthening diversity and enhancing pluralism • Providing space to members from the minority and Dalit communities in the higher decision making processes • Building better relationship among different groups - to promote equality, justice and peace

  7. Update: training programs • Around 158 women participated in • 6 workshops on human rights • 2 trainings on data collection • 2 trainings on creation of area resource groups • 20 women were provided training on tailoring

  8. demand for rights • In Mahua, WF continued campaigning against the fertile land allocation for a cement plant in the area • Organized a huge rally from Mahuvadistrict’s Doliyavillage to Gandhinagar Secretariat from 3rd - 17th March 2011 against Nirmacement plant • Handed over the memorandum to Chief minister of Gujarat • Similar campaign run against an atomic plant coming up in Bhavnagar • Local leaders from various movements also visited Environment Minister to speak against Nuclear Power Plant coming up at MithiVirdi • Large number of people participated in 4-5 public hearings • WF members actively participated in campaign for National Land Reforms Policy organized by EktaParishad Social Auditing Women have raised the issue of corruption in release of subsidy under Indira AwasYojana (IAY)

  9. demand for rights • Spoken against inefficient functioning of Public Distribution Systems (PDS) • Women now aware of the mandatory quantities of food and other supplies under PDS, • Have been demanding the same from the local fair price shops • Going in groups, • Gone up to the District Collector to file complaints • These initiatives undertaken in 7 villages • Participation in school enrolment drive as a part of the SSA program • Actively campaigning to secure job cards and work for their members under MGNREGS and NREGS in Dahod and PanchmahalDistricts • Good number of WF members participated and contested in elections, at the village and block level to promote their agenda of democracy, good governance and inclusive development • Faced violence from political parties • Some got good support from police while in other cases, women used their power of knowledge and influence (pressure) to ensure justice was done

Livelihood opportunities and biodiversity conservation • Focus on increasing the agriculture productivity by promoting a new improved variety of Maize (Gujarat-6) • Federation purchased seeds worth Rs. 1,08,000 from the 65 acres of seed plots being developed last year • Encourages the sale of these seeds to more than 1440 farmers in 31 villages • Also provides extension services including micro nutrient packets to increase productivity • 120 demonstration plots developed in the season to promote the variety • Promotion of ginger farming • 30 demonstration plots for paddy

Livelihood opportunities • Provision of financial services - credit and insurance • Linking with banks under the NABARD Bank Linkage program to get credit for setting up micro-enterprises • 2 SHGs from Pipodara and Dhudhmali village linked up to secure a credit of Rs.1.25 lakhs each from NABARD • 33 SHGs are also linked up to get bank loans under the Mission Mangalam (NRLM) program • Recovery of funds • Going around villages and discussing with various loan program beneficiaries • Almost 90% repayment ensured in many areas • For others, contemplating stringent legal action by sending legal notices to defaulters • Focus on getting more and more families enrolled under group insurance scheme initiated by the federation last year • So far, 300 families have been linked up under the scheme

Non-violence initiatives • Trained paralegals support NyaySamitis to identify women facing violence and motivate them to access justice. • Cases handled • Domestic violence • Land rights/alienation of women, • Child marriage, • Freedom of choice in marriage  • Communal conflict and VAW • Non-payment of equal wages under MGNREGA • Incorrect BPL Card allotments • WGWLO • People from other villages have also started approaching for support • Committees continued with orientation trainings and programs with school students and youth on the issues of communal harmony and the need for peaceful coexistence. • A film on peace and communal harmony has also been developed

Changes • improved planning and monitoring processes with clearer results, indicators of change (quantitative, qualitative, processes, timely) • changes in roles and responsibilities of the members • strengthen the existing MIS to enhance learning and knowledge generation • Capacity building and opportunities to several team members • Almost 80% of the team in the past 2 years have gone through these changes • 50% of the total team have demonstrated good trainers skills and some of them are already being invited to provide trainings to others • Opportunities have been created for members to enhance their Research skills that will help in advocacy and improved strategies • Review meeting every six months
