  1. The Benefits of using Moodle in the classroom By Dawn Miller

  2. What is Moodle? Moodle is an Open Source Course Management System (CMS). It can also be called a Learning Management System (LMS) or Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

  3. How can Moodle be used? K-12 educators can use Moodle to supplement the curriculum in the classroom. In a university setting, teachers can conduct entire courses online. It is a great way for teachers to convey materials other than in a face to face manner. It enhances teaching by allowing students to experience learning in a more interactive way.

  4. Moodle Features • Teachers can upload class materials, pictures, videos, and more. • Safe online chat rooms and discussion boards. • Teachers can conduct quizzes, tests, and surveys online. Students can receive instant feedback on their work. • Teacher can record and manage grades. • Moodle is accessible anywhere. Students can access class materials at home.

  5. How can Moodle help to close instructional gaps? • Moodle can present learning through graphics, text, sound, and video which can be effective for diverse learners. • Moodle can be fun and very interactive, which promotes better retention of knowledge. • Moodle fits with this generation of “digital natives”, students want instant feedback when learning. • Moodle allows for students to communicate and collaborate with each other when learning. • Students can access materials at anytime and anywhere. Students can learn at their own pace in a comfortable setting outside the classroom.

  6. Meaningful and authentic learning • Learning online can provide meaningful and authentic learning for students. Moodle allows teachers to use text along with visuals (multi-modal learning) which intensifies student learning. • Students can experience learning in a more in depth and engaging way. They have opportunities to collaborate and share their work with others.

  7. How can Penn Lincoln teachers use Moodle? • Teachers can present a new concept during class time and then assign students practice or enrichment activities on Moodle for homework. • Literature circles can be conducted online using Moodle. • Classes at Penn Lincoln Elementary can collaborate on projects with students in other district elementary schools. • Moodle can allow for our shy students to feel more comfortable. When students chat online, shy students may feel better about expressing themselves. • Students can take virtual field trips using Moodle. This will help with budget constraints.

  8. Remember… • Moodle is free and can be accessed anywhere at anytime. • Moodle is a means to provide authentic, meaningful learning experiences. • Teachers can easily upload class materials, graphics, sounds, and videos. • Students can use Moodle to take quizzes, tests, and surveys while getting instant feedback on their work. • Teachers can use Moodle to record online learning grades.
