  4. Three Key Questions

  5. What gives you JOY ?

  6. Is it something that taps your talents, really engages all of your abilities and gifts and uses them in the best way possible?

  7. Is this a genuine service to all of the people around you?

  8. Do you get a kick out of it? Are you any good at it? Does anyone want you to do it?

  9. These questions are important to us as a Catholic, Franciscan community • They come from a “restless search to create another world - - the world of peace and love we are called by the Gospel to create.” • And as long as we continue to question “there is hope left for us to finish the creation that God began.” • Rev.   10. Francis did not in want everyone to become priests or sisters. He only wanted people to be free, to be what they wanted to be in their own hearts. “Francis knew that God spoke differently to each person, calling one to marriage, another to the single life; calling one to the city, and other to the country; one to work with the mind, another with the hands. Francis encouraged us to be brave enough to look inside and ask: ‘is this what I should be doing, what I’d really want to do with my life?’ ” - Fr. Murray Bodo, OFM

  11. We want students to know: • Our God is a good and gracious and loving God • That our God needed the “YES” of Mary to be present in the world • That our God needs our “YES” too AND IN ALL OF THIS We need to provide opportunities for our students to say this “YES”

  22. Responsibility With FREEDOM comes RESPONSIBILITY

  23. Responsibility ? Attend all classes Be ACTIVE in class Know your instructors Sit up front Ask questions Be prepared for class Come to understand and respect the Neumann University core values - - how do these values influence YOU and YOUR DECISIONS . . . What is expected of you?

The Parental Responsibilities: • Ask about their classes and instructors • Have your student sign the form that allows us to discuss academic progress with you and that allows you to see grades • High School Model - - Parent Teacher Conferences • College - - students need to give you the “right” to find out this information, even if you are paying the bill • You need to the Social Security Number (last 4 digits) of the student about whom you are asking and their birthdate

You will see this information posted outside of the Office of the Registrar RELEASE OF EDUCATION INFORMATION TO PARENTS IF YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER HAS AUTHORIZED NEUMANN UNIVERSITY TO DISCUSS ANY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION PERTAINING TO HIS/HER EDUCATION RECORD, YOU MUST PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION, AS A CROSS-CHECK VERIFICATION, BEFORE ANY INFORMATION CAN BE RELEASED: • THE LAST FOUR [4] DIGITS OF HIS/HER SSN • BIRTHDATE WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE IN THIS MATTER . . .

Be Aware of These Important Dates: Classes begin: August 26 Opening Mass of the Holy Spirit: Thursday, August 29 [11:00 a.m.] Know about DROP/ADD Friday, August 30 Labor Day Holiday: Monday, September 2 Know about PROGRESS REPORTS and MID TERM GRADES October 11 Fall Break: October 14 and 15 Withdrawal Period Ends Wednesday Nov 6 . . . NEVER withdrawal without seeing a Financial Assistance Counselor

  27. Freshmen Registration – about third week of November Thanksgiving Break: Thursday, November 28 until Sunday, December 1 Last Day of Classes: December 6 Final Exams: begin December 9 Residence Hall Close: 24 hours after last exam . . . STAY TUNED!!

  28. More Tips for Families: ASK THESE QUESTIONS: Who is your advisor? How often do you talk with him/her one on one? What is the ARC? Where is it? Have you ever been there? When or Why would you go? What classes are you taking next semester? What grades will you get in each class this semester?

Know about and explore unique programs and services: Study Abroad We have partnerships in the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Ireland, China, Australia, and Italy You can do this and still graduate on time . . . and it is affordable! It’s impressive to future employers It is a fun, growth-filled educational opportunity

  30. More Questions to Ask . . . • Who is your R.A.? • Who are your friends? What are they like? • If you feel lonely or alone, with whom do you speak? • How is your INT 101: Freshmen Experience class going? • How are you: • Building and participating in COMMUNITY? • Feeling and Sharing the smiles that mean JOY? • SERVING and being SERVED? A N D • Are you PRAYING? (Let them know you are praying for them!)

  31. John 3:16 An often quoted Bible verse: “God gave his only ‘child’ . . . ” It reminds us that the point of having children is to let them go. They have their own work to do in the world. Remain open to what God has in mind for them and for you as this “next step” unfolds
