  1. Intro Literary Analysis Paragraph Hook-Introduce HTRLLAP & its point or purpose Introduce the movie/text you will be applying HTRLLAP to & give some background about its publication & author Give a brief summary of the book/movie you are applying HTRLLAP to (setting, plot) Thesis Statement with road map (3 developmental main points) ***THE THESIS IS THE BACKBONE OF ESSAY. IT PROVIDES THE ESSAY WITH STRUCTURE & A PURPOSE **THE THESIS ALWAYS CONTAINS 3 DMPs THAT MAKE UP THE BPs

  2. Body Paragraphs • Topic Sentence • Introduce chapter title for the paragraph & provide quote from chapter as evidence • Provide example from movie • Explain how it ties to chapter criteria First of all, the chapter discussing baptism can be applied to “The Shawshank Redemption.” In chapter 18 entitled “If She Comes Up It’s Baptism,” the author explains that water in literature and film “can be restorative and cleansing” (157). In the movie, Andy Dufresne, after being found guilty of murdering his adulterous wife and her lover, is given two life sentences in Shawshank State Prison. Over the course of 19 years, he secretly tunnels his way out of the prison, emerging from a sewer pipe into a flooded ditch. As rain from a violent storm beats down upon him, the sewage he crawled through to freedom is literally rinsed away. Symbolically, Andy’s sin is being rinsed away, and his soul cleansed. In other words, this represents Andy’s rebirth and new life after leaving Shawshank behind.

  3. Body Paragraphs *BPs ARE THE MEAT/MUSCLE OF ESSAY. *EACH BEGINS WITH A TS THAT INTRODUCES WHAT WILL BE DISCUSSED IN THAT PARAGRAPH. *1 BP DISCUSSES 1 DMP FROM THE THESIS *YOU WILL HAVE 3 BPS TOTAL *EACH BP WILL CONTAIN 3 DIFFERENT Quotes FROM THE STORY YOU ANALYZE (9 Qs TOTAL IN PAPER) *Quotes ARE EXACT WORDS TAKEN FROM THE TEXT BEING DISCUSSED. (EX: “I SAY, GOD IS DEAD!”) *QUOTE DOESN’T HAVE TO BE SOMETHING SOMEONE SAYS

  4. Entire Breakdown of Steps • Topic Sentence (TS) • Evidence in form of Quote (q) • Example from movie • Analysis of how movie relates to quote • Evidence in form of Quote (q) • Example from movie • Analysis of how movie relates to quote • Evidence in form of Quote (q) • Example from movie • Analysis of how movie relates to quote • Conclusion Sentence(CS)

  5. Quotes in MLA (Modern Language Association) • Quotes must have 4 PARTS in order: TRANSITION, LEAD IN…., “QUOTE” (AUTHOR page #). 1. TRANSITIONS =words & phrases that help sentences & paragraphs flow together smoothly. Examples: • HOWEVER, THEREFORE, FOR THAT REASON, TO BEGIN, SECOND OF ALL, FIRST OF ALL, IN CONCLUSION, NEVERTHELESS, ACCORDINGLY, IN ADDITION 2. LEAD IN = all words after the transition that lead smoothly into a Q (EXPLAIN LATER) 3 & 4. Quote is exact words from story followed by, and in parentheses, last name of author & page # (don’t write the # symbol) Parenthetical Citations are also known as in-text citations

  6. CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH *Purpose is to recap the highlights of your paper • Restate points then summarize each topic • Connect each topic to a greater idea or message of the film • Connect back to opening idea
