Trends & Developments in Steel Sector – Indian Scenario • 5th largest producer of crude steel in the world and is expected to become the 2nd largest producer by 2015-16 • World's largest producer of direct reduced iron (DRI) or sponge iron • Per capita steel consumption is 47 kg against world average 190 kg • Domestic steel consumption at 44.28 million tonne registering an increase of 8.0 per cent ( 2010-11) • 222 MoUs have been signed with various States for planned capacity of around 276 million tonne • Investment plans in states like Orissa, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Karnataka, Gujarat and Maharashtra

Iron & Steel Industry in West Bengal • India’s first Iron & Steel Industry set up at Kulti, Bardhaman in 1870 • Proximity to rich iron ore & coal reserves in the neighbouring states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa • Accounts for about 10% of India’s total steel capacity • 2 integrated steel plants, 1 alloy steel plant , large numbers of pig iron plants, sponge iron units and secondary steel mills located in the state • 10 steel plants ( investment of Rs 109550 crore ) proposed to be set up • Massive expansion plan of existing public sector steel plants

Iron & Steel Industry in West Bengal • In the period 1991-2010, 494 new Iron and Steel units were set up with a total investment of Rs 24837.13 crore • 34 new Iron & Steel Units were set up with investment to the tune of Rs 10714.51 crore in 2010 • Production of finished steel increased to 2686 thousand tonnes in 2009-10 from 1994 thousand tonnes in 2007-08 • Production of semi finished steel increased to 3099 thousand tonnes in 2009-10 from 1759 thousand tonnes in 2007-08 • In the year 2008-09 production of Crude steel - 4124 thousand tonnes Pig Iron – 909 thousand tonnes Sponge Iron – 1490 thousand tonnes
