Sober BAC 0,1% Preliminary findings Driving with and without a secondary task: • The drivers managed to drive straight despite being under the influence of alcohol if no secondary task were given to them. • When performing a secondary task it became more difficult to maneuver the vehicle safely, especially when the drivers were influenced by alcohol

Conclusions and remarks from tests • We are poor judges of how influenced we are by alcohol • Awareness and driving ability is significantly degraded by alcohol • Risk taking is influenced by alcohol • Vehicle control correlates strongly with alcohol intake • Many similarities exist in the effect of drowsiness and alcohol intake, but also critical differences

  12. Experiences • The “day after” effect is often underestimated • The lock do prevent drink driving • Very few “register red” • The few who “register red” often do this several times • Early discovery of persons with alcohol problem

  13. Future trends • Increased interest and awareness • Improved technology • Testing for other drugs • Alcohol testing together with driver alert systems • Transmission of alcolock status from the vehicle • Harmonised technical standards and legislation
