5. What is HJP? Free legal clinic at King County Superior Court House and Regional Justice Center
Serves low-income King County tenants
Staffed by volunteers
3 programs: Seattle, Kent, PM
Provide legal counsel for, negotiate on behalf of, represent, and provide referrals for low-income tenants facing eviction
Ultimately, HJP is a homelessness prevention project
6. What is the history of HJP? Started at RJC in 1998 by Columbia Legal Services thanks to fellowship obtained by Aurora Martin
2004 KCBA took over
Steady increase in client visits
1934 total in 2007
2379 total in 2008
2510 total in 2009
Biggest increase is in Kent and PM clinics

7. Where and when are services available? HJP Kent:
RJC (401 4th Ave N, Room 1281) 8AM 10:30AM
HJP Seattle:
KCSC (516 3rd Ave, Room W-314) 8AM 10:30AM
HJP PM:
KCSC (516 3rd Ave, Room W-314) 4PM 5PM
Realistically clinic will run until noon on busy days
Services provided on a walk in basis
1st priority: Show Cause Hearing
2nd priority: Writ Issued
3rd priority: Answer due or other time sensitive matter
8. What is the volunteers role and commitment? Legal Assistants conduct intakes and provide research and support
Attorneys provide legal service (C&A, Neg, Lim Rep)
New volunteers asked to make 1yr commitment
First training, then 3-5 shadow sessions
Scheduled for 1 shift per month
Should arrive at clinic at 8:30am
Calendar is created quarterly
Volunteers should coordinate w/program managers to change dates
