Enhancing Mathematics Education: Goals, Practices, and Materials Alignment

This discussion focuses on the foundational elements of mathematics education from a practitioner’s viewpoint. Participants will articulate their learning goals for students, explore effective teaching practices, and identify necessary materials for achieving those goals. By reflecting on the Standards for Mathematical Practice, educators will assess how these principles influence their teaching methods and curriculum. The session culminates in collaborative poster creation, offering a platform to visualize and clarify educators' ideals in mathematics instruction for future enhancement.

  1. AMP Day 1, 2013 The Triad as a framework of practice

  2. Discussion 1. As a mathematics educator, putting aside all exterior influences (e.g. Standardized testing, textbooks, etc.), what are your learning goals for students? 2. What would your teaching practices look like to accomplish these goals? What would students be doing? 3. To support these of goals and practices, what materials would you need/use in  your practice?

  3. Discussion • Record your lunchtime conversation on poster paper • Share ideas

  4. Discussion • How do your Goals, Practices, and Materials align with your current practice? Explain.

  5. Discussion The Standards for Mathematical Practice • 1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. • 2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively. • 3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. • 4 Model with mathematics. • 5 Use appropriate tools strategically. • 6 Attend to precision. • 7 Look for and make use of structure. • 8 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. Think-Share: How do these connect to your poster?

  6. Discussion • What impact will the SMP have on your teaching? Will your teaching need to change? If so, how?

  7. Discussion • Regroup and redesign: Create a new poster that clarifies your ideal Goals, Practices, and Materials • You should be able to articulate what you mean by each item. • The idea now is to organize, clarify, and to be concise. • This poster will be saved for use in future CCOL sessions.

  8. Discussion • Share new, improved posters. Be prepared to answer questions of clarification.

  9. Reading Reflections: Homework • How does your current curriculum look with respect to sequence, coherence, and focus? • Provide (and explain with detail) at least one example from your curriculum that illuminates: • A poor sequence of objectives • A lack of coherence or inappropriate focus
