  2. In general… • Every complete sentence must have at least two components: • A thing (noun) • An action (verb) In sentence structure they are called… • Subject • Predicate

  3. Subjects • the subject is the noun that takes action • To find the subject, ask yourself: who or what is taking this action? • The answer is your subject.

  4. Examples • John went to the store. • It was hot outside.

  5. Predicate • The predicate is the action • Action verbs are easy to identify, but remember verbs of being: am, is, are, were, was • A sentence can have more than one predicate

  6. Examples • We ate pizza. • Love was his only motivation.

  7. Objects • Objects are nouns in the sentence or clause that do not take actions • If a noun takes the predicate, it is the subject; therefore, if a noun is not the subject then it must be an object.

  8. example • Weatechicken. • Iforgot my shoes.

  9. Compound Subject and Predicates • Occurs when a clause has more than one subject or predicate functioning as a single unit • A compound subject is when two or more separate subjects take the same predicate • A compound predicate is when a subject or group of subjects take two or more predicates

  10. Examples • John and Iplayed a game. • Iwent home and studied.
