  2. History • The Alice Springs School of the Air was the first one of its kind established in Australia. It is a primary aged correspondence school that utilises various communications technologies to have daily contact with students, home tutors and teachers. The first broadcasts were made from the Royal Flying Doctor Base in Alice Springs, Northern Territory (NT), in 1951.

  3. School information • Alice Springs School of the Air is one of two Schools of the Air in the Northern Territory provided by the Department of Employment, Education and Training (DEET). • The School offers a wide range of educational services and activities to isolated primary children in the southern half of the Northern Territory, the extreme north of South Australia and the south-east of Western Australia.

  4. The radio was in continuous use from 1951 until 2005. The mail room at the school resembles that of a small post office, moving thousands of items a week.

  6. The life and opportunities for students living in remote areas is diverse, interesting and often challenging. This school is helping this student to have more opportunities in education.
