  1. MATH for SCIENCETemperature Conversions I. Temperature Scales ~ There are three different temperature scales; Fahrenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin. A. In the United States the Fahrenheit scale is used to measure the environmental temperatures. B. Most other nations use the Celsius scale for environmental temperatures. C. The Standard International (SI) temperature scale used in science is the Kelvin scale.

  2. II. Conversion Formulas ~ A. Fahrenheit to Celsius C. Celsius to Kelvin oC = 5 (oF – 32o) oC = oK – 273o 9 B. Celsius to Fahrenheit D. Kelvin to Celsius oF = 9oC + 32ooK = oC + 273o 5 E. Fahrenheit to Kelvin F. Kelvin to Fahrenheit This is a two step process. This is a two step process. Step 1. oC = 5(oF – 32) Step 1. oC = oK – 273 9 Step 2. oK = oC + 273 Step 2. oF = 9oC + 32 5

  3. III. Water Scales The temperatures for when water freezes and boils differ according to the temperature scale being used. See the following chart: At sea level & 25 oC Fahrenheit Celsius Kelvin Water Boiling 212o F 100o C 373o K Water Freezing 32o F 0o C 273o K

  4. IV. Conversion Problems ~ These temperature conversion problems are easily done by substituting the given temperature into the appropriate equation. A. Fahrenheit to CelsiusoC = 5 (oF – 32) 9 1. 50 oF to oC 2. -10 oF to oC oC = 5 (50 – 32) = 10 oC oC = 5 (- 10 – 32) = - 23.3 oC 9 9 3. 80 oF to oC 4. 98.6 0F to oC oC = 5(80 – 32) = 26.7 oC oC = 5 (98.6 – 32) = 37 oC 9 9

  5. B. Celsius to Fahrenheit oF = 9oC + 32 5 1. 25 oC to oF 2. 0 oC to oF oF = 9 (25) + 32 = 77 oF oF = 9 (0) + 32 = 32 oF 5 5 3. 100 oC to oF 4. 45 oC to oF oF = 9 (100) + 32 = 212 oF oF = 9 (45) + 32 = 113 oF 5 5

  6. Celsius to Kelvin oK = oC+ 273o 1. 17 oC to oK 2. 40 oC to oK oK = 17 + 273 = 290 oK oK = 40 + 273 = 313 oK 3. 100 oC to oK 4. 120 oC to oK oK = 100 + 273 = 373 oK oK = 120 + 273 = 393 oK D. Kelvin to Celsius oC = oK – 273o 1. 500 oK to oC 2. 0 oK to oC oC = 500 – 273 = 227 oC oC = 0 – 273 = - 273 oC 3. 250 oK to oC 4. 355 oK to oC oC = 250 – 273 = - 23 oC oC = 355 – 273 = 82 oC

  7. E. Fahrenheit to Kelvin Step 1: oC = 5(oF – 32) 9 Step 2: oK = oC + 273 • 77 oF to oK 2. 14 oF to oK oC = 5(77 – 32) oC = 5(14 – 32) 9 9 oC = 25 oC = - 10 oK = 25 + 273 oK = -10 + 273 oK = 298 oK oK = 263 oK

  8. Kelvin to Fahrenheit Step 1 oC = oK – 273 Step 2 oF = 9 oC + 32 5 • 358 oK to oF 2. 198 oK to oF oC = 358 – 273 oC = 198 – 273 oC = 85 oC oC = -75 oC oF = 9(85) + 32 oF = 9(- 75) + 32 5 5 oF = 153 + 32 oF = -135 + 32 oF = 185 oF oF = - 103 oF
