  1. Pine Ridge, South Dakota 2010 CSW Service Learning Trip April 1 – 9, 2010

Objectives • Students will learn about the about physical and cultural geography of South Dakota • Students will participate in community service projects aimed at helping the Oglala Lakota Indian people • Students will work and socialize with Lakota Indians and learn about Lakota history and culture • Students will develop a lasting relationship with the Oglala Lakota people

  3. Tentative Itinerary • Departure: • 4/1/10 - 11:30 a.m. from Philadelphia International Airport ***Students must be dropped off at PIA at 9:00 a.m. on 4/1/10. Students are responsible for transportation to the airport.

  4. Tentative Itinerary • Thursday 4/1/10 – Saturday 4/3/10 - check into lodge - visit Mount Rushmore - sightsee the Black Hills/Badlands - tour Wind Cave National Park

Tentative Itinerary • Saturday 4/3/10 – Friday 4/9/10 • Re-member (Pine Ridge Reservation, SD) • Work on assigned service project • Visit Lakota people • Learn about Lakota culture, spirituality, and form relationships. • Examine the US government’s treatment of Natives and be exposed to US/Native history from the Native perspective. • Visit the Red Cloud Museum and cemetery, the Wounded Knee Memorial, Singing Horse Trading Post, and the badlands. • Participate in Lakota ceremonies (if available)

  7. Tentative Itinerary • Return: • Friday 4/9/10 at 6:35 p.m. • Students are responsible for arranging their own pick-up from the airport

Re-member details • Non-profit, non-denominational organization • Has coordinating week-long trips for volunteer groups for 12 years. • Focuses on helping Lakota people in need and affording volunteers an immersion experience • Volunteers sleep in dormitory-style buildings • All meals are provided by re-member • Work is done with Lakota people • Transportation will be provided by Re-member while we are on the Rez

  10. Four Basic Tenets of Native American Spirituality • Recognition of the interconnectedness of creation and the responsibility of humans • Belief that all life is equal and contains the spiritual • Primary concern with the long-term welfare of life – all life • Spirituality is undergirded by thankfulness to the Creator

Pine Ridge Overview • Unemployment—80-90% • Per capita income of $4,000 • 8 Times the United States rate of diabetes • 5 Times the United States rate of cervical cancer • Twice the rate of heart disease • Alcoholism rate estimated as high at 80% • 1 in 4 infants born with fetal alcohol syndrome or effects • Suicide rate more than twice the national rate • Infant mortality is three times the national rate • Life expectancy on Pine Ridge is the lowest in the United States and the 2nd lowest in the western hemisphere. Only Haiti has a lower rate.

What to bring • Warm clothes and warm socks (avg. temp 45°) • The temperature will fluctuate anywhere from 10°-20° • Daytime temperature could get as high as 70° • Nighttime temperature could get as low as 20° • It is almost always very windy! • Comfortable shoes to work in (sneakers are fine) • Bedding and a pillow (Re-member does not provide this) • Towel • Sunscreen • Hat • Water Bottle • Camera • Spending Money ($75 - $150) • Book • Journal

  14. What to leave at home • Extra clothes (pack only what you need) • Tools • Valuables • Any clothing with “Indian” logos • I-Pods • Computers • Stereotypes

  15. Expectations of Students • Participate in all activities • Act respectful towards Lakota culture/people • Keep an open mind • Behave in accordance with Charter’s Code of Conduct • Communicate with Ms. Loberif a problem arises while we are traveling
