  1. Thyatira: The Church in Darkness

  2. P P A G A L A A N P ROME Pagan Papal

  3. Who ruled the world when Jesus wrote the letters to the seven churches? The churches represent different time periods. Which periods were during the time when Pagan Rome ruled the world? Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamos

  4. Timeline Ephesus 1st Century A.D. Pergamos 313 A.D.– 538 Smyrna 2nd-3rd Centuries Thyatira 538 A.D. – 1798

  5. Emporer Justinian During the Pergamos Period, the Roman church grew stronger and stronger while the Roman Empire grew weaker and weaker. In A.D. 538, Emporer Justinian shared much of his power with the Pope. For the next 1,260 years, Papal Rome ruled the world.

  6. Thyatira Thyatira was the smallest and least important of the seven cities; it had no special political or religious significance. However, the city was known for being a commercial center with a much commercial industry. Lydia, the seller of purple, was from Thyatira Trade guilds were very strong in this city. It is speculated that the guilds required members to participate in festivals at pagan temples – those who weren’t members were most likely ostracized. Most of the people were very poor laborers.

  7. Thyatirian Church Members I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first. Rev. 2:19 Great love begets great faith which begets great works for God.

  8. Faith and Works All good works spring from genuine faith, and the fruits in the works show the character of the faith. Hence it is by our works that we shall be judged. E.G.White Bible Echo Jan. 15 1889 We are in the time when tribulations such as the world has never yet seen will prevail. "Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time." But God has set bounds that Satan cannot pass. Our most holy faith is this barrier; and if we build ourselves up in the faith, we shall be safe in the keeping of the Mighty One.Early Writings 72 If you evaluate how your time is spent, what do your works say about your faith and love? What does it say about your safety?

  9. Thyatira: The Dark Ages Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols. Rev. 2:20 Catholic church replaced the Bible with church tradition – the scriptures were forbidden. Works became a means of earning salvation. People were led astray from the simplicity of the gospel and were led to look to priests to forgive their sins and save them. They bowed to images. The church was united with the state. Whoever resisted the apostasy and corrupting influences of the Catholic church experienced rejection, persecution, and death.

  10. The Church in the Wilderness was a Light in the Darkness Most commonly known are the Waldenses. However, there were also the Albegenses, Vaudois, Leonists, and Lollards who were the "brothers" of the Waldenses.  They loudly denounced the falsehoods which were sweeping away the truths of the Bible. "They held that… the Pope's pardons were a cheat; that purgatory was a fable; that relics were simply rotten bones which had belonged to one knew not whom, … that holy water was not a whit more efficacious than rain water; and that prayer in a barn was just as effectual as if offered in a church. They were accused, moreover, of having scoffed at the doctrine of transubstantiation, and of having spoken blasphemously of Rome as the harlot of the Apocalypse." History of the Waldenses 17. Because they spoke against the Church of Rome the Waldensians were labeled as "heretics.“ http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.tt.writtentreasures.org/010RE_24.JPG&imgrefurl=http://www.tt.writtentreasures.org/part_4.html&usg=__mqIUk1HTk8PfaDV57gM4cyRtJRs=&h=290&w=175&sz=21&hl=en&start=5&tbnid=2PKWNRO9n1fDLM:&tbnh=115&tbnw=69&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dwaldenses%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG

  11. Imagine living in a mountain hideout in the Dark Ages…

  12. Reformation Voices And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not. Revelation 2:21 More than 100 years before the reformation, God raised up men who called the church to repentence. The call strengthened with the reformation. However, the church would not repent. Instead she launched the counter reformation. See Jeremiah 51:9 Jesus is always testing and searching our hearts. Yet many of even those in the church refuse his healing. How about you?

  13. Consequences for Jezebel Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great ____________, except they of _______their deeds. And I will kill her children with death; and all the _________shall know that I am he which __________the reins and _______: and I will give unto every one of you according to your _____. Revelation 2:21-23 tribulation repent churches searcheth hearts works What was Jezebel known for? Leading the Children of Israel into idolatry. What are some idols that you might have in your life? Are you willing to give them up for Jesus?

  14. I know thy works… And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass… “Look and see how stands your measurement of character as compared with God’s standard of righteousness, his holy law. The worshipers are to pass under the measuring line of God. Who will bear the test? Christ says, ‘I know thy works.’” Youths Instructor 8/25/1886

  15. Promises to the faithful But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden. But that which ye have already hold fast till I come. And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. And I will give him the morning star.Rev 2:24-28

  16. What are we to hold fast to? “Those who have accepted the truth of the third angel's message are to hold it fast by faith, and it will hold them from drifting into superstitions and theories that would separate them from one another and from God.” In Heavenly Places 349 1 Thessalonians 5:21 2 Timothy 1:13 Hebrews 10:23 "Hold fast." This does not mean, Hold fast to your sins; but, hold fast to the comfort, the faith, the hope, that God has given you in His Word… When you gave yourself to Christ, you made a pledge in the presence of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,--the three great personal Dignitaries of heaven. "Hold fast" to this pledge. . .Sons and Daughters of God 351 What are you holding fast to?

  17. Will the Morning Star be your reward?
