Announcements • Complete Handout Lessons 5 and 6 in class – turn in before the end of class. • Keep into the Bibles in your notes to be checked and graded tomorrow: • Complete Into the Bible p. 48, 49 #1, 2, 4 • Complete Into the Bible p. 54 #2, 3 • Test Friday over Lessons 6-8 • Memorize Joshua 1:9 p. 54 for tomorrow – 29 pts

  6. Work on assignments in class • Tomorrow we will lecture. • Remember all assignments must be completed in class today. • When you complete the Bible Searches – bring them to me so that I can check them to see that you completed them. • Keep them in your notes. • Handouts must be turned in.

Student will be able to: • See that God’s assurance to Joshua of His abiding presence applies to Christians today • Analyze the physical and spiritual significance of Israel’s crossing the Jordan River • Contrast God’s original plan for the conquest of Canaan with what actually happened • Compare the conquest of Canaan with the battle and victories experienced in the Christian life • Compare the plan for support of the priesthood in ancient Israel with the plan for support of denominational employees today • Examine the ways the cities of refuge symbolize how a sinner experiences salvation and • Compare Joshua’s role as Israel’s deliverer with the saving work of Christ.

Review Wilderness Wandering • Got to the borders of Canaan and lost faith • Joshua and Caleb the only ones that weren’t afraid and believed God would take care of them • Wandered in the wilderness for 40 years • Until everyone over 20, except for Joshua and Caleb died • Joshua is now the leader of the Israelites • Moses and Aaron could NOT enter the promised land

Joshua means – the Lord savesJesus is called the 2nd Joshua – Jesus is the Greek translation of Joshua • Come to the flooded Jordan River • How to cross? • Priests carried the Ark of the Covenant into the middle of the Jordan and stand there until all the Israelites crossed over – Joshua 3:17 • Once across – they honored God by getting 12 stones from the river bed and making an altar/memorial on the other side • First thing they did in the Promised Land – honor God

  10. 1st major obstacle - Jericho • 2 spies sent before they crossed the Jordan to spy out the land – Joshua 2 • Rahab (Jesus’ relative – Matthew 1) – a prostitute saved the spies • God’s battle plan • Walk around the city for 7 days • On the 7th day blow the trumpet and shout to the Lord • For 6 days they walked around the city once with 7 trumpets blaring • On the 7th day – they walked around the city 7 times and then the people shouted to the Lord on the 7th time and the walls came down

  11. Jesus versus Joshua • Joshua saved God’s people from their enemies and led them into the Promised Land • Jesus saves people from their sins and leads them into the heavenly Promised Land • Joshua is dead – but Jesus is ALIVE and continues to save people from their sins

  12. Cities of Refuge • Joshua 20 tells what they are • God told Joshua to set up the cities • In case of accidental death – someone accidently killed someone they could run to the city of refuge and be saved. • Jesus is OUR city of refuge – a place of safety in times of trouble
