  4. NEED • J&K has been suffering due to terrorist violence since last 20 years. • Further, due to the lack of latest infrastructure, availability of expertise high skill, students of our State have very less opportunities for higher career growth. • Exposure to cutting Edge Technology is restricted Dept of CS & IT, University of Jammu

  5. NEED • Approximately 2000 students go out of the State for Engineering every year and about 1200 Engineering graduates are produced locally. • We want to create global job opportunities for our students and not let them become fodder for imported violence. • Further, currently there is no skill enhancing course available in J & K State in general and in Jammu University in particular that could provide Training to the students of the region in Cutting Edge Technology with Real Time Practical Experience in World Class Lab Infrastructure. Dept of CS & IT, University of Jammu

  6. NEED • If our students get value added programmes here in Jammu University- • Better placement opportunities in high technology • New direction to learning and skill development • Culture in the Department Dept of CS & IT, University of Jammu

  7. THE PROPOSAL TRAINING IN VLSI & EMBEDDED SYSTEMS SUPPORTED BY IIT BOMBAY Proposal Number De-21110910417 • Microelectronics (also called Chip Design or VLSI) is a new and emerging area. • The demand is far greater than the availability of the trained engineers in this field. • Training in world class Lab infrastructure provide great value in Higher Technical Education System. Dept of CS & IT, University of Jammu

  8. THE PROPOSAL TRAINING IN VLSI & EMBEDDED SYSTEMS SUPPORTED BY IIT BOMBAY Proposal Number De-21110910417 • Programme supported by Powaii Labs, IIT Bombay. • Imparting courses on Embedded and VLSI Systems • High practical component • High Quality support for interactive Education delivery and Training including onsite training, projects etc. from Professors at Powaii Lab, IIT Bombay. • Includes setting up of Lab infrastructure at Dept of CS&IT (nodes and specialized softwares)

  9. OBJECTIVES • Association with leading Technological Institute in the area of High Research. • Initiate collaboration with highly experienced expert faculty and Vibrant leading Research Environment. • Opportunity of getting High end Industrial oriented Practical Knowledge to the MCA, Engg. Students. • Feel and real time experience of working with Latest softwares in World Class Lab Infrastructure. • Online interaction with the leading people in the areas of high expertise with web based courses and regular visits. • Boost to Placement opportunities to the youth of J&K. • Enhancement of research avenues in J&K. Dept of CS & IT, University of Jammu

  10. Using Information Communication Technology, we can deliver high technical education at our University • We can make use of internet to have delivery of IIT Bombay VLSI courses at our University. • A model has been build by Microelectronics group of IIT Bombay to deliver content, onsite support, onsite Laboratory etc to frog jump the VLSI education in the Country. 10 Dept of CS & IT, University of Jammu 5th Dec 2009

  11. We want to participate with IIT Bombay for delivering VLSI Education using ICT • What we need is faculty training • VLSI courses have huge Laboratory component and unless we don’t have the required Laboratory, the delivery of courses will be of little help. • IIT Professors conducting the microelectronics courses via internet, will send representatives to visit us on regular bases to support the education delivery; a visit per two weeks for each course. 11 Dept of CS & IT, University of Jammu 5th Dec 2009

  12. SUPPORT FROM IIT BOMBAY • Visit can be more frequent or less, depending on what the Professor conducting the course deems appropriate. • These support visits ensures onsite training, conducting of assignment, projects and acting as feedback between the student and the Professor at IIT Bombay. 12 Dept of CS & IT, University of Jammu 5th Dec 2009

  13. THEMODEL • The physical presence of the Professor being amiss in distance education is not felt in this innovative model built by microelectronics group of EE department at IIT Bombay. • These support visits are free of cost with the VLSI Laboratory, set-up at the remote location. • VLSI Laboratory at remote location is a mirror image of the Laboratory available at IIT Bombay 13 Dept of CS & IT, University of Jammu 5th Dec 2009

  14. PLAN FIVE YEAR PLAN • Looking at the requirements of our University, we plan to set-up a fifty node Laboratory and have a five year plan for achieving the objectives. • For this we need Rs. 385 lacs over five years. 14 Dept of CS & IT, University of Jammu 5th Dec 2009

  15. PLAN THE PILOT PLAN INITIALLY FOR SIX MONTHS – • We plan to have a pilot of six months with a small Laboratory of ten nodes and need Rs. 50 lacs for it. Dept of CS & IT, University of Jammu 5th Dec 2009 15

  16. THEBENEFITS If this project is granted and established here at DCS&IT, University of Jammu, Jammu • it will boost the overall career opportunities for the students and open up new avenues for the youth of the region to gain skill and knowledge in this latest technical area. • It will also help in enhancing the research initiatives in new areas of cutting edge technology. 16 Dept of CS & IT, University of Jammu 5th Dec 2009

  17. In addition, the local faculty shall also immensely benefit both academically and intellectually by associating with highly experienced and expert faculty and vibrating research environment of IIT Bombay. • bring far reaching benefits to the Department, region and society at large. 17 Dept of CS & IT, University of Jammu 5th Dec 2009
