The Hello, Goodbye Window By Norton Juster Illustrated by Chris Raschka 2006 Caldecott Medal winner for best illustrations in a children’s book Discussion • Discuss the picture on the front of the book, guess who the character is and what they may be doing. • Read the story. (Caldecott) • Discuss the story – How do you think the girl in the story feels about her grandparents? Name some of the things she saw? • Display pictures of the windows from the field study • Discuss things we may have seen, ways of living, who the people would be in the scenery. What do you see? • Use perspective. Discuss different perspectives from inside the window and outside the window. Activity Students will write at least three sentences describing who and what they see from the window. They will state whether they are inside or outside and give the time of day. Discuss day and night and the differences in what you see during the different times of day. Follow Up Discussion and Activity • Discuss the Caldecott Award. • Look at the illustrations in the book. Discuss how the illustrations were made and why this type of illustration may have • been chosen for this book. Discuss the colors used in the book. • Have students create an illustration of their writing that depicts what they may have seen from the window on their • field study. Other activities • Bring in family photos to discuss, create a family tree (http://kids.familytreemagazine.com/kids/FamilyTreeForm.asp), • create a biography of a family member, talk about other Impressionist.
