Winds of change • To keep up with friends, you actually had to see them. • To organize a party, you had to pick up the phone. • To get a date, you had to have chemistry. Now, thanks to the miracle of online social networking sites, you can manage your life without taking your hands off the keyboard.
Facebook Background • Originated at Harvard University February 2004 • Mark Zuckerberg created site to rate/berate others • Got in trouble w/university for using University Images • More than 6,000 Harvard people signed up within the first three weeks • Within 4 months 40 Colleges had requested • In September 2005, facebook.com launched a service for high school students • 2006 facebook.com opened to all adults (this demographic is the fastest growing population) • It typically attracts 80% of a school’s undergraduate population *U.S. News and World Report September 18, 2006
Facebook Stats • More than 200 million active users • Average user has 120 friends listed • More than 3 trillion minutes are spent on Facebook each day • More than 18 million users update their status at least once each day • More than 70% of Facebook users are outside the United States

Main Uses of Online Networks • Students can post photos, send messages, join groups of interest • Students regularly look at profiles of people they know and people they don’t… • Items included on profiles: name, address, phone numbers, hobbies, class schedules, list of friends, groups, interests, etc. • Students are able to include whatever they want. • Sky's the limit!
What Can The Networks Provide? Advantages: • Finding old high school friends • Looking up profiles of classmates/friends • Communication • Getting help with homework and academics • Advertising and marketing campus events • Building a portfolio of new friends • Spreading the word about concerts, book sales, and student organizations • Music

Monday Morning • I didn't ask for it. I didn't want it. Regardless - I got it. Monday, Facebook turned a halogen spotlight on the dim backyard of my online social life. … No longer! Now every student barricaded into a dorm room can enjoy the buzz off a double shot of gossip every morning before breakfast without the social inconvenience of getting to know more than a handful of people on their floor. What Can Happen • Administrators are now on online social networks • Judicial proceedings can and do happen from information on the sites • Police use for warrants • Employers are using online networks to weed out potential employers who don’t meet values
Privacy • Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg: • "Some people may get busted by administrators if they're doing things that are stupid, but on a day-to-day basis, the ability to communicate ... is so valuable that everyone keeps using the site, and they probably will keep using the site."
What Can We Do? • Be proactive • Educate • Survey • One-on-one conversations with students • Educate on Privacy Settings • Informational cards • Warn students • Remind students • Develop programs and/or presentations
What message should we send? • If you wouldn’t post it on your front door, don’t post it online • Use privacy settings to help control who can access your information • Your online profile may be the only impression someone has of you • Civility matters…even on the Internet • Build your character and strengths, not what you did last weekend
Final thoughts? • Get a facebook account…SERIOUSLY! • Show your kids you know how to use what they are using, and are willing to learn what you may not know how to do. • Become their “friend” • Don’t get angry with content • Education over Enforcement

The impact of instilling self-esteem in young people, who will use these values to help others rise to a better quality of life, is beyond measure.
