  2. Current situation in Lithuania (1) • Great concentration of talent. One of the best-educated people in Central and Eastern Europe • 23 universities and 23 colleges with a total enrolment of 201.000 students, 35 science institutes • Kaunas Technology University – largest technical university in the Baltic States • Network of R&D centres in 3 largest cities. Specialization in different scientific research areas • One of the most multilingual peoples in the EU – among five EU countries with highest percentage of people speaking at least one foreign language (mostly English, Russian and Polish) • Governments’ support (EUR 400 M grants in 2010-2012)

Current situation in Lithuania (2) • Transport & logistics – excellent geographical location and infrastructure; prime transport centre in the region linking the EU with the East • Energy – well developed infrastructure and international projects • ICT – modern knowledge economy; companies leading among the Baltic States • Biotech – World-class progress; production does not have equivalents in Central and Eastern Europe • Lasers – globally acknowledged production and inventions • Metal processing, machinery & electric equipment – widely acknowledged high-tech products

  5. The future belongs to innovation (1) The innovation politics in Lithuania is formed and its’ implementation is administrated by The Ministry of Economy and The Ministry of Education and Science. The main document of the strategic innovation policy planning – Lithuanias’national Innovation Strategy for the year 2010-2020. The main objectives of innovation development are to:- increase Lithuania's integration into global markets (“Lithuania without borders”);- develop a creative and innovative society;- develop various innovations;- implement a systematic approach to innovation.

  7. Economic growth programme EU SF support instruments for R&D and innovation development:

Inogeb LT-1 The aim of the Measure- to strengthen the Lithuanian innovation system in order to develop effective operational expertise and technology environment to encourage national enterprises to further develop R&D and innovation activities. There are 14 projects implemented by the Measure with total financing of 6.4 mln. EUR. Most projects are beeing implemented in the period of 2010-2012. Agency for Science, Innovation and Technology (MITA) MITA was established on 4th of May in 2010 MITA is the main governmental institution, responsible for implementation of innovation policy in Lithuania. The main activity is the coordination of national (high-tech, industrial biotechnology) and international programmes (FP7, EUREKA, EUROSTARS, CIP) of research, technological development and innovation and other financial schemes (innovation vouchers, protection of industrial property rights).

Science Parks’ activity results • There are 11 Science (and Technology) Parks in Lithuania, 4 of them have The Ministry of Economy as its’ shareholder • The total area of ​​parks’ buildings in Lithuania is 24.965 sq. m. (in neighboring states a total area of ​​one park is about 17.300 sq. m.) • Annually about 2,000 businesses use the services • Physical about 265 companies are currently located in Science Parks (2010 December) • Companies create about 200 high-value added jobs each year • Companies pay about 6.000.000 EUR of various taxes each year

  13. New initiative - Inogeb LT-3 • New initiative to be administrated by Agency for Science, Innovation and Technology (MITA) • Supported activities: 1. Dissemination of information about the R & D and innovation programs, the EU's support for business development, innovative projects and Lithuania's achievements in R & D and innovation. 2. Public services for small and medium businesses, that is creating or seeking to create innovative activities in relation to: • business and scientific cooperation and fostering partnerships for innovation and development; • informative support and counseling for administering international R & D projects, innovation and related programs. 3. Other kinds of innovation-related activities to promote the development and R & D and innovation to improve the environment.

Sustainable chemistry; mechatronics and related electronic technologies, the future of energy, information and communications technologies. „Nemunas“ valley. Dirrections related to agriculture: agro-biotechnology, bioenergetics and forestry, food technology, safety and health „Santara“ valley. 4 scientific research dirrections: biotechnology and high-molecule materials; molecular medicine and bio-pharmacy; ecosystems and secure environment studies, modeling, informatics and communications technologies. „Sauletekis“ technological valley. 4 scientific research dirrections: laser and light technology; materials and nanotechnology; semiconductor physics; electronics and organic electronics; civil engineering.
