  1. Cardinal DirectionsThere are four basic points on a compass. These four points are at the top and the bottom, and on the right and left sides of a compass. They are called the Cardinal Directions or points of the compass.

  2. The point at the top is North.

  3. The point at the bottom is South.

  4. The point at the right is East.

  5. The point at the left is West.

  6. Degrees Each Cardinal Point also has a degree number that measures the amount of each direction. We count these degree numbers in the same way we count on a clock - as the arrows show.

  7. You already know that a circle has 360 degrees. We measure direction on a compass the same way. A compass has 360 degrees, counting from the top all around the compass circle to the top again.

  8. The North point is at 0 (zero) degrees at the start, and 360 degrees after a complete circle is made. The East point is 90 degrees.

  9. The South point is 180 degrees and the West point is 270 degrees.

  10. Let’s Review A compass has four Cardinal Points. These points are known as North, East, South, and West. These four points have number values. A compass has 360 degrees in it. For each Cardinal Point, there is a number value: North = 0 or 360 East = 90 South = 180 West = 270 http://www.angelfire.com/fl/compless/cardinal.html
