Acceptable Use Policies and Security of Information Systems • A parent signature is required to give permission for their child to use the District’s computers and electronic communications system/Internet access. If permission is not given, it is still understood that the child may be be required to use computers for purposes such as word processing, use of educational resources, or taking mandated online tests. • The AUP requires a parent permission requirement for student Internet access. All of the students with whom I worked with have the required permissions. Students who are not allowed Internet access have access to books for research. • The AUP gives information concerning security of information systems at Colony Meadows Elementary. An Internet filtering software is in place to protect students from inappropriate Internet content. Teachers can bookmark appropriate sites for use to ensure student safety. Student/teacher information is protected through passwords.

  3. Equitable Access to Technology in School • There are two HP 7650 computers in my kindergarten classroom. One for the teacher, and one for the student. They both have access to the Internet. Students have access to educational websites such as www.starfall.com. • Students are allowed to access the computers in the classroom during center time. To ensure equitable access, each student has their own log in id and password.

  4. Equitable Access to Technology in School • There are several computers in the school library. The students have access to programs such as Maps 101, World Book Online, Tumble Books, and Reading Counts.

  5. Equitable Access to Technology in School • There is one computer lab with 25 HP computers at Colony Meadows Elementary. A scanner, digital camera, projector, lap top, and Smart Board is available for use. • Labs are assigned on a rotating basis. Kindergarten goes to the computer lab once every week. The lab is up for use if someone does not want his or her own time. However, the lab schedule is not working for every teacher because of time conflict.

  6. There are many software programs available for classroom use. Microsoft Word, Microsoft Powerpoint, Microsoft Excel, Kidspiration, and Internet Explorer are some of the programs on the computer. There is a software library located in the school, however, teachers may not check out equipment for home use or during the holidays. Equitable Access to Technology in School

  7. Physical Safety and Health Related to Technology • Firewalls are set up to ensure the safety in the classroom. Students cannot access sites without a password. • There are not and safety concerns that need to be solved because the kindergarten students don’t know how to access the computer without help from a teacher. They are currently practicing logging in with their id and password, and have not been able to open a software program or website independently. • In order to maintain a safe environment, I would bookmark the sites for my students and teach them how to access it.

  8. Equitable Access to Technology in the Community and Home Environment • All eighteen of my kindergarten students have access to computers at home, and they all have Internet access. • For students who do not have computers/Internet access at home, they could access the public library.

  9. The Instructional Technology Specialist handles technology support at our school. Allison Bachert is the permanent tech support person. She rotates to two schools, so it takes about 1-3 days to access tech support. Christa Pryor is the librarian. She has a Smart Board and educates teachers about databases.   11. Ongoing Professional Development Colony Meadows offers technology training for all teachers. The training is for three years.

  12. The technology committee at Colony Meadows includes one teacher from each grade level. The members are Austin Michelle, Melissa Bonnett, Peggy DeMarsh, Jennifer Helfer, Ginny Lastovica, Janet Leland, Tresca Ndu, Bernadette Potttmeyer, Christa Pryor and Geri Torno. They meet together once a month to address issues or concerns. Some of the issues discussed during a meeting include time conflicts with the computer lab, use of resources, and other technology problems. School Technology Committee

  13. School Support of Technology Integration • Based on the results, I have found that the school appears to encourage integrating technology into the curriculum. I see many teachers employing technology enhanced lessons with videos from United Streaming. I also see that computers are set up with software programs especially designed for students, like Kidspiration and Tumble Books.

  14. Planning for Technology Integration Based on the results of this technology infrastructure hunt, I would like to see more structured use of computers in the classroom. In kindergarten, there wasn’t a rotation set up for the computer center, so the students that finished their work first were the same students that got to be in the computer center everyday. Also, there was no time limit so that one student could spend the whole time on the computer if he or she’d liked. I believe it would be best if there was a rotation schedule posted up so that each student could have an equal opportunity to learn using technology.
