  1. Foundation Phonics Meeting November 2013

What is ? • A scheme the school adopted last academic year. • Very structured and fast paced; rapid teaching and learning of sounds and blending. • All children involved, every session. • Taught throughout Foundation and Key Stage One (until the age of 7). • A rapid Learn to read programme so children… • Read to learn for the rest of their lives

  3. Sounds • All words are made up of sounds. • These are called phonemes. • In English there are 44. • We use ‘Fred Talk’ to help the children to hear each sound within a word.

  4. Graphemes • A grapheme is a sound written down. • English is a very complex code – there are more than 150! • More than one way to spell each sound. • For example: a_e in came, ay in play, ai in rain, ey in they.

  5. Children learn a simple code first Consonants: stretchy Set 1 Consonants: bouncy Vowels: bouncy Vowels: stretchy Set 2 Set 2 sounds Set 1 sounds

  7. Pronunication • It’s really important to say the sounds and not the names of the letters at this stage. • Try not to add ‘uh’ onto the end of sounds. • Pronunciation guide video. • https://global.oup.com/education/content/primary/teaching-support/pages/rwi/?region=international# • Probably very different from how you were taught at school.

  8. Fred • Fred helps children learn to read. • Fred can only talk in sounds... • (Fred can only say c_a_t, he can’t say cat). • We call this Fred Talk. • If your child can understand Fred talk they can blend orally. • Blending is needed for reading.

  9. Fred • Fred helps children learn to spell too! • Children convert words into sounds. This is called segmenting. • They press the sounds on to their fingers... • We call this Fred Fingers.

  10. How can you help your child? • By using the 44 pure sounds. • By using the Speed Sound cards with your child. • By knowing how to blend using Fred Talk for reading. m_a_t > mat • By knowing how to use Fred Fingers for spelling. 9/3/2014

  11. How can you help your child? By having fun with Fred Talk at home! • “What a tidy r-oo-m!” • “Where’s your c-oa-t?” • “Time for b-e-d!” • back, head, tum, leg, hand, foot, knee • coat, hat, scarf, zip, sock, glove • run, walk, skip, hop, fast, slow, stop, shop • red, blue, green, black, • knife, fork, spoon, plate, bowl, pan • bread, cheese, meat, soup, jam, cake

  12. How can you help your child? By showing them how to write the grapheme correctly which matches the phoneme. Use the rhymes to help.

  13. And… • By reading your child lots of lovely stories and asking lots of questions! • Use these prompts to help you: What is that character thinking? What do you think happens next? What is happening? What do you think that character is feeling now? What is the character saying?

A typical Phonics session20-25 mins daily • Recap on sounds already taught • Teach a new sound/recap a sound children are finding more difficult to remember • Letter formation, air writing • Fred talk • Assisted/independent blending • Make words using magnetic tiles with their partner • Read words – real and nonsense against the sand timer • Later in the day they practise handwriting on paper OR • Complete a reading activity. Children work in small groups of no more than 6 children of a similar ability.

  16. Once children know all Set 1 sounds • We move on to ‘independent blending.’ • Teacher says a word e.g. tin and the children use ‘Fred Fingers’ to say each sound in the word. • They then make the word, finding the graphemes themselves rather than using the teacher’s model.
