What is BPA Free? • BPA: Bisphenol A, is also known as BPA • It is a an Endocrine disrupter that directly affects reproductive system in experiments done on animals, BPA commonly used in making plastic bottles is found to cause cancers and other malfunction of internal organs. For instance, when laboratory mice are exposed to BPA, they develop symptoms of cancers such as breast cancer and prostate cancer. • BPA FREE: materials that do not contain or release BPA • At present, most plastic containers and packaging materials in the market that can sustain a temperature of 120C are made of PC, and PC contains BPA. When these products are washed with detergents of Sodium Oxide or Sodium hydroxide, they release BPA 。 • The world is banning BPA • 2008/10/18 – Canada banned the use of BPA in manufacturing baby bottles • 2010/4/6 – Taiwan • 2011/1/1 – French • 2011/1/1 – The US Congress proposed to legislate the ban in 6 months • All EU Countries banned the use of BPA containers starting Mar1, 2011

Replacing PC with EastmanTritan™Practical example 1 • Reports on 2010/5/13 - leading industrial packaging and service company Greif Packaging, adopted Eastman Tritan in making their reusable water buckets designed especially for home and office use. Tritain is chosen because it is perfect for withstanding vigorous washing and detergent chemicals. In addition, it is durable and BPA free. • Greif began using Tritan Polyester copolymer in making reusable water bucket as early as January 2010. There are now 2 sizes of 3-gallon and 5-gallon containers.
