  1. Uses of Electromagnets • Done By: Yiwen & Rachel • Class: Grade 8 Diamond

  2. Sorting Metals • Food manufactures use magnets to keep small metal filings from machinery from getting into food • Sweets and drinks dispensing machines use magnets to separate coins from slugs that are put into their machine • Junkyards use electromagnets to pick up cars and other heavy metal objects

  3. Transportation - Maglev • Maglev trains use magnetic repulsion • Maglev trains use super conducting magnets in the track and on the underside of the train to “float” above the track • Maglev trains can travel very quickly

  4. Medical Science • Magnets can heal fractured joints or any broken bones quickly and more effectively.  Magnetic therapy • Magnetic Therapy for healing has been around for centuries. Many ancient civilizations, such as the Greeks, Indians, Chinese and Egyptians, used magnets for medical purposes.

  5. It’s theorized that magnets attract metal elements in the body, such as iron in blood, to increase blood circulation and therefore instigate healing. Increase of blood circulation Decrease of blood circulation

  6. In ancient times, the magnets that were used were so large that they were hard to maneuver. However, today’s magnets are smaller and stronger and can be put anywhere on the body.  Usually, the magnets are put directly on the skin or inside clothes.

  7. Simple Diagram Think of the domains inside the magnets:  how do they react when hammering?

  8. Relays • Electromagnets are used to control the switches in relay. • Relays are amazingly simple devices. There are four parts in every relay: • Electromagnet • Armature that can be attracted by the electromagnet • Spring • Set of electrical contacts

  9. Diagram:

  10. Levitating Keyboard uses magnets to float keys • The magnetic keyboard  In place of the switches or springs found in most normal keyboards, the new racks uses magnetism to cushion the keys by levitating them upwards and away from the contacts that register keystrokes.

  11. The technique is actually better for the hands than current keyboards, as it can adjust the strength of magnetic field – and the cushioning effect.

  12. Compass • A small freely suspended magnet piece inside the compass helps us find directions.  The North pole of the magnet indicates North direction and the South pole of the magnet indicates South direction.

  13. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION!!! LOL AHAhaAHHAHA
