CHEP03 • Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics • Regular series, every 18 months • 24 to 28 March, 2003 • Univ. of California, San Diego, La Jolla, CA, USA • >400 registered • But fewer turned up (war just started) (~350?) • ~20 registered from the UK • Programme details and most presentations at • http://www.chep03.org • The talks are on “updated” program at • http://chep03.ucsd.edu • Written papers by 30 May 2003 – for Proceedings D.P.Kelsey, CHEP03 report
Program 08:30-18:30 am pm • Mon 24 Plenary Parallel • Tue 25 Plenary/Posters Parallel • Wed 26 Plenary Tours • Thurs 27 Plenary Parallel (Banquet) • Fri 28 Plenary Summaries D.P.Kelsey, CHEP03 report

Plenary Talks • Future Data Analysis Rene Brun • S/W development (HEP) Fed Carminati • Networking Harvey Newman • CDF & D0 Steve Wolbers • Grid talks Fran Berman, Miron Livny, Ian Foster Dane Skow, Ian Bird, Panel • ATLAS and CMS online Monika Grothe, Frans Meijers • Lattice Gauge Bob Sugar • The Optiputer Phil Papadopoulos • Conference Summary Torre Wenaus • Excellent summary of the conference • And the state of the field D.P.Kelsey, CHEP03 report
Observations (DPK) • In general, well organised, but … • Program difficult to follow (too many versions!) • Parallel speakers not identified • Plenary was in a very large theatre • Front half was less comfortable • So everyone sat at the back • Difficult to ask questions – few microphones • Parallel sessions were (often) more interactive • But so many of them! • CHEP used to aim for mix of physicists, computer scientists and Industry – not sure it achieves that so well these days • Wireless network worked well • Sign-on to UCSD web to get access to DHCP and router • Network problems one morning • Speakers that day got the best attention! D.P.Kelsey, CHEP03 report
The Wenaus Summary • I attended (some of) Parallel streams 1 and 2 (GRID) • Don’t intend to give a summary of those today • So will show some of Torre Wenaus’ Summary slides (See separate link from HEP SYSMAN web page). D.P.Kelsey, CHEP03 report
CHEP04 • Next conference • To be organised by CERN • Somewhere in Switzerland • Close but not too close to CERN! • Autumn 2004 D.P.Kelsey, CHEP03 report
