SAT Exams. • October 22 ACT Exam. • November 1 ED/EA Deadline • November 5 SAT Exams. • December 1 Seniors should make every effort possible to have their applications completed. • December 1 Final deadline for all teacher and counselor recommendations.  • December 13-16 Exams • January 1 Earliest date to submit FAFSA.

  2. Applying - Rolling, Regular, and Early • Rolling • Many public and some private institutions. • Best chance if you apply no later than early-October. • Schools accept qualified students as applications arrive. • Regular • Most private institutions. • One established application postmark deadline. • Review of application usually begins AFTER this date, but don’t wait until the deadline to apply! • Notification date is mid-March to early-April.

  3. Early Decision (ED) Binding. The applicant must attend if admitted. For those who have thoroughly researched and have found the right place and definite top choice. May apply to only one ED school. Early Decision and Early Action • Early Action (EA) • Non-binding. • For those who may have identified the right place, but want to consider other choices. • Carefully follow the institutional instructions regarding limitations on EA applications.

  4. The Application • Essay • Counselor Recommendation • Teacher Recommendations • Activities • Standardized Test Scores • The Transcript • Financial Aid Application

  5. The Application: Which One? Institutional Application • Available on college’s web site. Common Application (400+ colleges and universities) • Available at www.commonapp.org. • Be certain to complete and send supplements. • BE CAREFUL when using the college’s name. • If a school offers the option of their application or the Common Application, please use the Common App.

  6. The Application – What and When? What do I submit to the counselor? • The application itself, essays, activity sheets, supplemental materials, etc. should be reviewed before they are submitted to colleges. • Form with list of colleges and deadlines. • Names of teachers writing recommendations.

  7. The Application – What and When? Details, details, details…. • Follow the college’s instructions carefully. • Send the application well before the deadline. • Inform Ms. Jamett or Mr. Gaines of all applications and the dates they were mailed • Keep copies of everything! • Proofread all applications carefully. • Check your email address/Facebook, etc. • If you do not receive confirmation of receipt of your application, contact the admissions office to double-check that everything is there.

  8. ACT and SAT • Remember that the colleges will ‘look at’ the highest score earned on any test. • If you still need additional tests, register immediately. Plan ahead!

  9. Standardized Testing – ACT/SAT Should you take another SAT/ACT? Consider the following: • Most will need SAT or ACT (with writing). • Most colleges that require SAT Subject Tests will require two or three. • Some schools do NOT require standardized testing. • Please check each college’s testing policies carefully. • Please check with your counselor about which tests you will be submitting to which colleges.

  10. Activities and the Application • Colleges want to see commitment to activities. • Years of participation. • Leadership in the activity. • Recognition at the state or national level. • The activity portion of the application. • You may choose to do a separate sheet with your activities listed and explained. • Do not leave the activities section of the application blank. Fill it out even if you are attaching a separate sheet. • Supplemental Materials (Art Portfolio, Auditions, Published Work, etc.) follow directions carefully.

  11. Getting Started • Determine the list of schools that will receive an application. • Determine which standardized test scores are required. • Write and rewrite essays. • Bring drafts of application materials to Ms. Jamett or Mr. Gaines. • Make a list of all deadlines. • Avoid senioritis.

  12. Final words of advice • Build the list from the ground up. • Honestly look for a match. • Talk about something else besides college. • Focus on your search.
