  1. EMC Standards Update CISPR SC A & ANSI ASC C63 Greater than 1 GHz Activity Don Heirman Don HEIRMAN Consultants Internationa/National EMC Standards Activity

  2. Site Validation above 1 GHz • Background • At present there is no test site validation standard accepted nationally or internationally that applies above 1 GHz for radiated emission measurements. IEC/CISPR has a document for national committee vote as a CDV in the voting stage; vote is due in April 2006. Internationa/National EMC Standards Activity

  3. Pub 16-1-4 • CIS/A/648/CDV: Site validation above 1 GHz: • Uses VSWR method of comparing maximum deviations for several antenna positions using both polarizations • Broadband transmit antenna E and H plane requirements stated and moved to illuminate sides of test volume • Receive antenna at normal position for making radiated emission measurements • Site VSWR must be less than or equal to 6 dB • Alternate: Omnidirectional probe in test volume; transmit antenna at receive antenna site Internationa/National EMC Standards Activity

  4. Site Validation above 1 GHz • Impact • The procedure should be tried by test labs to see what is needed to be done to alter their test chamber to meet the fairly strict requirements stated in the standard • This procedure is different than the tact taking in ANSI ASC C63 which uses a time domain reflection measurement Internationa/National EMC Standards Activity

  5. Site Validation above 1 GHz • Timing • The standard is in CDV stage with a closing date of 7 April 2006 • It is anticipated that if the CDV is approved, its availability in CISPR 16-1-4 will not happen until at the earliest Fall of 2006. Internationa/National EMC Standards Activity

  6. Measurements above 1 GHz • Background: • There has been an urgency to publish a measurement procedure above 1 GHz in CISPR Pub 16. In May 2005, the procedure was published in CISPR 16-2-3 which differs than that in ANSI C63.4-2003. Internationa/National EMC Standards Activity

  7. Pub 16-2-3 • Measurement method > 1 GHz: • No antenna “aiming” or “boresighting” • No antenna height search if EUT vertical size contained in receiving antenna beamwidth • EUT rotated no more than 15 degree steps Internationa/National EMC Standards Activity Don HEIRMAN Consultants

  8. Measurements above 1 GHz • Impact: • Depending on the product standard and regulatory requirements, either ANSI C63.4-2003 should be used for such measurement in the US or CISPR 16-2-3 procedures should be used. These are two different test techniques and as a precaution may give differing answers. Internationa/National EMC Standards Activity

  9. Measurements above 1 GHz • Timing: • Published as Amendment 1 of first edition of CISPR 16-2-3. • Immediate for those product committee standards or regulatory requirements that call out for the use of CISPR 16-2-3 (or include the test techniques of CISPR 16-2-3 in the product standard itself) Internationa/National EMC Standards Activity
