  4. A Little About Me I are so excited to be your child’s teacher this year! Being a primary educator is a never ending learning process. I learn right along with our students. My philosophy for teaching is to always provide a nurturing learning environment.

  5. A Little About Me I have been an early childhood educator for 8 years! 4 years in a preschool setting 4 years in PS 121 teaching first grade I am so thrilled to be apart of the Matilda Avenue School !!

  6. Students will be working on goals: • having a positive mindset for learning • trying our best every day • not giving up • being realistic • learning to set personal goals • following our curriculum goals • building our stamina • Goal Folders daily

  7. Academic Standards This year we will focusing on strengthening your child’s independence in reading, writing, math and more. The expectations for first graders have become rigorous and challenging due to common core standards so please continue to work very closely every night with your child. I will be sending home weekly homework assignments and projects to support each students academic needs.

  8. Reading and Writing This year we will focus on: -Becoming independent readers by using a variety of reading strategies (Using the pictures, chunking, stretching out the sounds and more.) -Becoming independent writers using a variety of writing strategies. ( Capital letters, sentence structure, adding details and more.) UNITS OF STUDY: Fiction/Narratives, Non-fiction/Informational Reports, Opinion

  9. Fundations This year in first grade we will continue to work on building our phonics skills. We will continue to work on handwriting, letter-sounds relationships, cvc sounds, short and long vowels. Unit 1- Letter Sound Relationships Unit 2- Consonants & reading trick words Unit 3-Letter Endings ( k, ck, c sounds ) Unit 4-Bonus Letters

  10. Math This year the students will be using Envisions. Units of Studies: Addition and Subtraction to 10 Fluently add and subtract within 10 Addition facts to 20 Subtraction facts to 20 Work with addition and subtraction equations Represent and interpret data Extend the counting sequence Understanding place value Compare 2-digit numbers Use models and strategies to add/subtract tens and ones Measure lengths Time Shapes and attributes

  11. Math We will also focus on daily math routines in order to strengthening fluency and basic facts. Number of the Day Number Talks Problem of the month-exemplars Estimation stations Friday Math Game Day

  12. Social Studies • This year we will learn all different topics. • UNIT 1-Families and Communities are Important • UNIT 2-Families Now and Long Ago • UNIT 3-The Community • UNIT 4-Community Economics

  13. Homework Each week your child will get a weekly calendar and word study words. Please take out worksheets when they are checked. Day 1- Word study 3x each Day 2- Sentences Please be sure to do the homework and sign the sheet. I will check homework daily! Important dates and activities will also be on the sheet so please read it carefully!

  14. Behavior Management The school has been implementing a PBIS program. Students have been earning Light Bulbs to earn rewards. Light Bulb System: Students will earn light bulbs when they are showing outstanding behavior. In the classroom we also have a daily check system. Students reflect on learning and behavior Green(excellent day) Yellow(a few reminders/warning), Orange (reflect/multiple warnings) and Red(parent phone call home) Students will earn stickers or small rewards as an incentive to follow directions and their personal goals daily.

  15. Classroom Rules We read many back to school books to learn about appropriate behavior. Please take a picture of our rules to review and always practice to help us grow as learners!

  16. Snack/Supplies Every day or most days we will have a quick snack within the classroom. Please be sure to send in something small and healthy (and easy to open) Please -No Glass Thank you for bringing in supplies- if you have not done so already please send in ASAP!

  17. TALK TO ME TUESDAY On Tuesdays your child will get the light blue folder. Please complete and ask the questions. Sign the back to know work was completed!

  18. Uniform/Schedule The students must be in their school uniform everyday! And sneakers on GYM days! Lunch: 11:55 Monday- Music/Stem Tuesday-Stem/Art Wednesday-Gym/Library Thursday-Gym/Library Friday-Stem/Gym

  19. Field Trips It is important that students experience their neighborhoods, special places, and activities together in order to build a classroom community. This year we will be setting up a variety of trips, permission slips will be sent home in advance and parent involvement is very important so to make our trips run smoothly! Approximately 2-3 chaperones per trip! Example: Bronx Zoo, Lehman College, Library

  20. MISC. Important Dates- NO SCHOOL 9/30 & 10/1 Bathroom Policy: Please discuss how to use the bathroom appropriately to help transition into using a hallway bathroom Birthday Policy: Birthdays are welcomed to be celebrated in class. Please notify me a few days prior. Cupcakes, juice pouches, and party bags are fun and preferred due to the fact they are easily served and can be cleaned up quickly. (cutting whole cakes and having little ones drinking from cups can get messy)
