The Distance Education Facilitator experienced DE teacher or teaching assistant with positive encouraging attitude toward DE familiar with course offerings and formats (OL, Pr, CS, etc.) responsible for school’s DE program and classroom facilitates delivery of DE courses using approved resources with rigorous expectations co-ordinates and encourages contact among the school, the student, and teachers … is central to success!

Administrative Support of DE Programs • Public support as a visible, equal educational alternative • School’s attitude of DE is positive and encouraging • Specific classroom for students taking DE courses • Timetabled class supervised consistently by a teacher or teaching assistant experienced in DE • Student accountability for attendance, conduct, and coursework • Current editions of course materials … just like any other class at the school …

Importance of a DE Facilitator: Students • Students rely on a DE facilitator to • Help them succeed by • Pacing instruction and monitoring progress • Scheduling submission of exam and DE coursework • Liaising with ADLC staff, parents, CS Admin • Solving issues affecting student success • Support their growth as independent learners • Structured learning environment

  6. Importance of a DE Facilitator: Schools • Schools rely on a DE facilitator to • Help students work toward successful course completion • Successful completions of DE courses increases school revenue (full CEU funding)

  7. Key Traits of DE Facilitators:Professional • Highly organized • Excellent skills in record-keeping • Independent worker • Excellent communication skills • Experienced with technology • Familiar with distance education courses • Addresses challenges of facilitating student learning

Facilitator Roles and Responsibilities:Classroom Layout • Effective spaces that support learning • Safe work environment • Easily supervised area facilitating supervision of students and student materials • Private area for student phone conversations with ADLC teachers • Equipped with resources to support learning • Computers with ready Internet access

Facilitator Roles and Responsibilities:Clerical Responsibilities • Organize and manage learning materials and submissions • Secure learning materials and exams • Consult and maintain accurate records • Register students • Before they begin working in a course • Accurate contact information: phone, mailing address, e-mail address • Targeted start and end dates

  11. Facilitator Roles and Responsibilities: Student Support • Orient students in print and online courses • Check student progress using “Check Your Marks” • Set and communicate appropriate timelines for completion • Assist and motivate students

Facilitator Roles and Responsibilities: Communication • Attend an annual regional ADLC Partnership Update Session • Inform students, parents, and school administration regularly about student progress • Communicate relevant student information to ADLC staff • Facilitate student contact with ADLC staff • Encourage contact with ADLC teachers for connections to subject expertise • Provide current student e-mail addresses during registration
