    2. WI Lumber Era 19th Century Logging re-shaped the landscape of central and Northern WI. Provided a livelihood for thousands of rough and tough workers. Formed the roots of todays lumber industry and paper industry.

    4. Wisconsin Logging Areas

    5. Cities such as Stevens Point, Wausau, Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, and Black River Falls were created due to the lumber industry. Several dozen logging companies profited from this multi-million dollar business. Enough pine was harvested from the Black River Valley alone to build a walkway nine feet wide and four inches thick around the entire world.

    6. Immigrants By the late 1800s, WIs population expanded by 200,000 people each decade. Roughly between 20,000-30,000 each year. Of the 10,000s of Lumberjacks, many were immigrants. Germany Scandinavia ***Norway, Sweden, Finland

    7. Lumberjacks Outrageously dangerous work. By 1895, lumberjacks earned between $50-60 per month. In 2009 Dollars.. Between $1,060-$1,300 per month Between $12,000-$15,000 per year Roughly between $5.20-$5.40 per hour

    12. The logs didnt always cooperate. Needed people to steer them down the rivers.

    13. Logging was the backbone of WIs economy from the 1850s the early 1900s. Around 1900, much of northern WI was already cut over, and the railroad drew logging companies to the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, Idaho).

    15. WI Logging Today According to the WI Professional Loggers Association there are 110 approved logging companies in WI today. Most are in Northern WI.
